I've perused a lot of messages here, most of them horror stories of who NOT to go to for hosting. But I still haven't seen a post that says "These people are great! I've been w/ them for a year and haven't had a single problem." Just out of curiosity (and because I am also looking for a good server) do any excellent hosts exist? Judging by the number of web pages on the internet, one would have to conclude "Yes, there are". But who are they? Can participants on this board give the names of some reliable hosts? I see "Wizard" being advertised here. Does that mean that this board endorses them as a reliable host or could they just be another rip-off artist paying this BBS to sell their wares?

I have four sites on CommuniTech.Net (now owned by Interland) for three years and have always had a least the 99.5% uptime that is promised.
I'm generally happy with them, but don't try and run ANY resource-intensive scripts because they are known to just shut off a website.

Its the story of the world. You are remembered for the things you didn't do, rather than the things you did :-)
We would not expect customers to go round BBS's praising us up, in fact on posts where someone does praise a host they normally come "under fire" with sceptical replies, suggestions of commercial links to that host etc etc.
We are going to put customer references on our new site, not "the names have been changed" 49pence jobs ;) but references from customers who are prepared to be contacted to confirm their reference and answer any other questions.
I think this is the only way to go.
If you think about it, the only way a host is going to get promoted by a BBS is by lots of people replying to a thread.
Take the number of hosting companies, then their customers, work out how many might use the same BBS, who are inclined to post a reply and you'll soon see that the number of posts are going to be small.

In my time here I've seen a lot of people come and go, but there are a few companies that have been here all along and as far as I can tell have gained very little bad press. A part of that list is:
Hostmatters
Ventures Online
Wizard Hosting
Jaguar PC
PWebtech (Pegasus)
Can-Host
Were I in the market for hosting a website anywhere I'd probably go with one of these. All well established companies, of decent size and realistically priced.
This is far from a complete list of course, but they're the first that pop to mind.

You should add " akashik.net " as well. :p
(I know, I know, you can't advertise)

I have sites at FutureQuest and VenturesOnline and they are both awesome. I would highly recommend them. VO is the less expensive of the two with top notch support.
