I would like to set up a web site, and I can't decide what TLD to use. The site is going to be about a particular topic, so I thought about using .info - but, just about all web sites are informational, so maybe it isn't so important that I use .info. The domain that I want still has .com available, in fact, all the TLDs are still available (com/net/org/ws).
What is the acceptance of .info? How about .ws? Are they really being used? Or are they only used when the other TLDs aren't available?
Any insights?

I would go for both. If you "only" own yourname.info many customers will type in yourname.com and come to a complete different site (maybe your competitor?)

Get a .com if possible because that's what most people are going to type in first.
I really can't get my head around the competing TLDs, for me it's .com all the way.

i would only buy the .com in that instance.
I have a few .info names for terms which are highly searched for, and where the .com/.net/.org are already taken.
I have seen some .info and .biz domains get very high placements in google for particular search terms, so I would not just completely dismiss them, they do have their value.

So far, the comments seem to indicate that .com is IT. I guess I sort of agree - after all, my personal site is abumami.com and I had my choice of all the TLDs. Seems that .com is the default.
I would go for both.Walter, I guess I have to agree with this. Especially for a web site that is strictly an informational site, .info is a natural choice, but .com is probably what everyone will go to first. Going with both takes care of both aspects.
if .com is available, there is no need to go for .info
It's easy to remember and you don't have to put in advertising budget just to remind everyone it's .info not .com

Hi Abu,
I too would always go for .com as first choice. I've bought a bunch of .info recently, as my guess is that it will become significant in a year or two.
I don't see .net or .org gaining any more ground, but "info" is the kind of word which is known widely and could gain good recognition. But it's just guessing for now of course :)
