View Full Version : A Unique Nameserver problem ...

Hello there DNS Masters!

I have a problem that defies my limited logic.

I have registered 4 nameservers with netsol

ns1.valai.net - 216.118.116.40
ns2.valai.net - 216.118.116.41
dns1.valai.net - 66.129.95.208
dns2.valai.net - 66.129.95.209

They are all registered some time ago and show up nicely in the internic whois.

I have no issues with the first two. They resolve fine and the domains they are authoritative for resolve fine too on my server at nac.net

However, the last 2 monkeys sometimes resolve to the IP and sometimes not [also read: from some places and not from some places like my office, home etc]

They are on my server with peak-10.com

I have delegated one domain quillmagic.com to the nameservers dns1.valai.net and dns2.valai.net and the internic whois shows up that also every time correctly.

I have installed tinydns in the second server and the patch for listening to multiple IP's is done right too;

sockstat |grep 53 correctly throws up the three IP's

66.129.95.38, 66.129.95.208 & 66.129.95.209 as I expect it to.

Now my problem is : my nameservers dont resolve to their IPs!

and not always but sometimes dns1 resolves, sometimes dns2 resolves...

I find this weird and any one helping this fool will receive my unlimited love, affection, gratitude and unto half my kingdom and all my girlfriends !

Cheers

Any firewalls in the way (not a bad thing obviously, but you maybe need to add a few rules) ?

kcoster,

This is not the problem with my server; nameservers in nsiregistry are not resolving ... and I just dont have a clue as to how it can happen

well no one seems to want my girlfriends! ;)

Thanks anyway

This is the problem. You should put the 4 hostnames in your zone file.

You forgot to add A record for dns1 and dns2.valai.net. You need to add it in your valai.net zone. You don't need to rely on netsol to do that, and in fact you shouldn't let netsol mess with your zone.

By God taz0!

I am sure you must be right!

My nameservers for valai.net are just ns1 & ns2 and the DNS there is mum about the other hosts!

I will let you know the result tomorrow mate but I am sure you must be right !!

What a subtle problem and what a subtle solution!

Thanks heaps :) :)
