View Full Version : Fight of the Sub 8
Byron 03-29-2002, 01:43 AM godaddy.com $8.95
powerpipe.com $8.88
namecheap.com $8.49
directi.com $8.49
reg2c.com $6.85
What's your experience?
Any hidden charges or problems you encountered?
Who do you vote?
Any other sub $8?
I am using currently registerfly, 000domains and directnic but these sub 8 are offering about the same features for must lesser price and some are even ICANN accredited. With quite a substantial amount of domains, a few bucks on each do add up pretty much.

What's your experience and who do you vote? . . . . I've only used two of those listed and have been quite pleased with the service.
GoDaddy and StarGate.
Abu Mami 03-29-2002, 03:12 AM Umm, wouldn't exactly call them sub-8. They're more like sub-10.
Anyhow, I'm currently using stargate and namecheap. I like namecheap better, but I can't remember why. That is, I seem to recall that stargate doesn't include one or two features (URL forwarding/redirect) as part of the price. As far as I can tell, namecheap included everything.
I was going to try reg2c and even exchanged emails with them. They were very prompt and helpful. However, they have been accused of spamming on this forum. I haven't been spammed by them, but I really don't like doing business with spammers so I decided not to use them. Anyone have any more information on reg2c? How about their spamming reputation? BTW - Some features aren't included in their very low price. Check their feature list before buying a domain name through them.
I still use directNIC ($15) for my critical domain names, but namecheap seems very good. So far I have no complaints.
Byron 03-29-2002, 04:01 AM Sub 9. ;)
Any experience on directi? They are ICANN accredited and price is $8.49.
Regarding reg2c, it seems that only some members on WHT were spammed by them. I have not come across any complaints on other forums.
Mike Feury 04-01-2002, 06:03 AM Hi Byron,
I started with 000Domains in 1999 and have used GoDaddy for the past 9 months. Happy with 000Domains.
The essentials work well with GoDaddy for me - site always available, registration process works well, couple of queries answered quickly and well, renewal reminders just starting to arrive now in good time.
They do put their extra services [hosting, site etc] in your face throughout the registration process. I don't mind as I want them to make money, but it could annoy some.
One current drawback - they say will be fixed 'soon' - is that there's no way to update your info [eg address change] for all your domains at once - got to do each individually.
There are no frills - it's basically registration & parking. Forwarding is $9.95/year.
There are increasing discounts if you register for 2-10 years [10years = $6.95] or register over 50 names at once [201 = $7.45].
I haven't used enough competitors to compare them, but overall I'm quite satisfied.
Byron 04-01-2002, 06:11 AM Hello Mike,
Thanks for your feedback.
You can do multiple domain info edit at RegisterFly. One drawback, they are slow in support response time.
Mike Feury 04-02-2002, 03:32 AM Hi Byron,
You're welcome :)
Another drawback I didn't find out about GoDaddy until after the above post is that they charge $20 for change of ownership. What I especially don't like is that it seems to be a hidden charge - I couldn't find it in ToS or FAQ :(
JKLIVIN 04-02-2002, 12:46 PM I have used Godaddy for over a year and have had no trouble as of yet.
Byron 04-02-2002, 01:16 PM Are there any other worthy contenders in the Sub 9 Arena?
Acroplex 04-05-2002, 02:34 AM You can take Stargate out of the sub-9 now.
But they are still very good, IMHO.
VoxKeysGtr 04-08-2002, 11:33 PM anybody actually used reg2c?
janderfox 04-30-2002, 11:28 PM I've used reg2c.com several times in the past and have had no real major issues. They are from Turkey, so with the exchange rate, it comes out to be a little above $7 but its still a good deal.
I was going to purchase another domain from them tonight, however they have just started using this credit system that only allows you to purchase domains through credits (credit are $7.15 ea. I think) and you have to purchase a minimum of 10 credits....
so now I am not too happy with that.
But as far as quality of their service... it takes a little longer for a domain to propogate with them, but other than that, no problems.
Great Deal!
