View Full Version : Fasthosts??
robkerry 12-29-2000, 07:49 AM Does anybody know anything about the fasthosts reseller plan??
Any good??
Are there any other reseller programs out there with unlimited webspace for under £50 a month?? (UK even better)
-Edward- 12-29-2000, 01:24 PM FastHosts Reseller plan is good. But can work out to cost a lot if you want things like livestats, control panels etc etc you can easily be paying out £200 a month.

Craig 01-06-2001, 08:03 AM Who aer Domhost?
Are they any good?
Never heard of them before heh
Are they better than fasthosts?
robkerry 01-06-2001, 08:09 AM Hi,
Donhost seem much better than Fasthosts.
Their £16 a month cheaper, you don't need to pay extra for a control panel or anything else.
Also, donhost run on Unix FreeBSD and not Win NT which I consider as a big plus. (If you've ever tried getting a good CGI or PHP script in cgi-resources or Hotscripts for Windows NT you'll know what I mean!!)
Once I have got my payment solution sorted out, im signing up!
Craig 01-06-2001, 11:39 AM May just be joining you in that move there.
I was going to goto fasthosts but heard awhole lot of **** about them, talking to the tech support guy today at donhost seems a nice guy and knew his stuff, which is a plus.
Same situation as you there mister, need to sort out my payment gateway :(
Cheers
Craig
MattKD 01-06-2001, 11:51 AM Hi guys,
RE FH...There is a LOT of downtime on accounts...sometimes you will try your site and it will just not work..then 10 mins and its back...
Recently, the whole of FS3 crashed, they have different servers that people are on, and as they hadnt backed up recently, they restored all of my sites with ones about 3 weeks old..which meant news posts\forums etc all went back in time..
Then to say sorry they sent a mail saying that I have 3 months free hosting (as that was the 2nd or 3rd time I had had big problems)..so I get this mail..then THE NEXT MORNING..they invoiced me for my monthly charge and took the money out of my account!
Anyway I have since been refunded but im only hosting a couple of sites for guys who are converting a couple of the asp scripts to php ones so I can move them to a new server (linux)
The control panel is good, its just a shame that there is so much downtime on their servers, its bag when people ask why their site is down all the time and there is nothing you can do about it.
Plus as already mentioned, lots of the features cost extra...Stats, client control panel, passworded directories (win2k) etc..
Thanks, Matt
robkerry 01-06-2001, 12:10 PM Thanks for that extra info.
It's lucky i didn't rush in and signup with Fasthosts!
The company isn't all bad. UKREG.com is owned by them and I can't wrong them. I'm just about to tell them that they are not the cheapest in the UK when they lower there prices again.
I worked it out that it's cheaper to resell UKREG.com's domains than it would be for me to register with Nominet and OpenSRS.
Craig 01-06-2001, 02:01 PM Rob, I would like to chat to you sometime.. You have ICQ? if you do could you add me please 26721271 Just put "rob" in the auth box so i know its you.
Have some questions that may help us both out ;)
Cheers
Craig
MattKD 01-06-2001, 02:09 PM I agree that Ukreg is good too...I havent had any faults with that at all.
One thing though, do you know hoe to add nameserver records to .co.uk domains as well as .com's?
Matt
robkerry 01-06-2001, 02:43 PM Hi again,
Craig, I don't have ICQ although I do have MSN Messenger.
You can download it from msn.co.uk and as long as you have a microsoft 'Passport' or a hotmail email address you can use it.
save me as 'robkerry84@hotmail.com', you can also email me there with any questions.
Matt, I dont know. Email UKREG using the support form, they are quite helpfull and usually respond in 1 working day.
What does that do anyway. I have always wondered although never looked at it as it had 'only use if an expert' on it. Expert at what??
MattKD 01-06-2001, 03:22 PM Okay Ill send a mail over to UKREG.
Basically, if you have a dedicated server, and a couple of IP's, you can make your own nameservers, ie
dns.me.com and dns2.me.com.
That feature on the Ukreg panel lets you say that dns.me.com links to 122.123.123.001
and dns2.me.com goes to 123.123.123.002
so that your servers will work and you can have your own nameservers..I was just wondering how this workd for uk domains
Matt
GordonH 01-06-2001, 06:30 PM Hello
They aren't really your own name servers.
You are just aliasing someon elses against two Ip addresses that arent in the crsnic.net database as nameservers.
By the way if you are creating ns.domain.co.uk you don't have to register them with Nominet in the way that .com ones are.
I have just stopped using nameserver names based on my company name and gone over to "anonymous" domain nameservers so that I can take on resellers more easily.
You don't really need your own name servers as a web host.
Having said that I have ns/ns2.hostroute.com and ns1-ns4.hostroute.co.uk.
It all got a bit messy which is why I am rationalising everything.

xporter 01-07-2001, 03:57 AM Just to clarify that I am not a salesperson or the owner of donhost nor I am advertising for them. I have been looking around for a plan for the past months at host index, web search, top hosts , hosting directory and my other search engines on unlimited hosting and reseller plan. I happen to come across donhost recently, their plan is just right for me because I have many domains and would not want to pay extra for any additional domain.
Some offer multiple hosting-pak 5,10 and some charge $2 for each additional domain. I even have consider Cixxxt for their dedicated server($99), Fasthosts for their unlimited NT. After consideration I finally decided to go for donhost at Christmas’ eve.
I came across a link to webhostingtalk.com while I was doing more research. I have learn a lot from you experts out there and thank God I didn’t go for Cixxxt. Now, I always logon to webhostingtalk every time at home & at work to look for new information instead search through the web without a direction to follow.
Donhost’s personal name server does not support TLD (.com, .net, .org) we have to use their DNS instead of my ns1,ns2.mydomain.com. This is not a big issue for me at the moment. Chicken recommended http://Zoneedit.com and http://centralinfo.net.
The support and respond time is great even though I am in Canada and they are in UK. I am a newbie in web hosting and I have to work within my budget. I am sure many of you would like to get as much as possible for every dollar you pay for.
One final word, I would I like say a word of appreciation for all the work you people have put into this website to help us newbie to understand, to make decision and provide information and ideas to in this area of web hosting.
Thank
Craig 01-07-2001, 05:58 AM I must agree with you there, xporter. This forum is an amazing resource for those in the business and trying to get into the business like myself, has proved very resoucefull.
I too was going to go for *****s 99/month dedicated till i read up in here and also was going to go for fasthosts till i was in here too. Now its off to donhost :)
Cheers for all your help guys
Craig
woodylen 02-15-2001, 02:27 PM They have a lovely website, great big adds in magazines, cheap prices compared to a lot of hosts. Ooooh it's so so tempting. But hold on a second, don't get taken in by their outwardly customer friendly costume, as it is a costume. Since I bought my reseller account 3 months ago, I have not been able to upload one whole site without a hitch. Not only that but there servers are so so slow. Their up time is terrible, I am too embarrased to re-sell the space they have given me, even though it is unlimited, it's not wirth it..by the time you managed to upload a mb you would probably have passed away, or you culd have grown that lovely beard that you always wanted, you know the one with the little white fluffy bits at the end that all the chicks dig. Anyway, I found out that they only have one external test machine that they use for connecting externally to their servers, which runs win98. I asked them if they could replicate my problem in anyway and they told me "no". So i went about trying to connect to their server using ADSL, 56k modem 33k modem, through proxy, no proxy, win2k built in ftp, win NT machine, win98 machine, cute ftp dreamweaver built in ftp. You name it I tried it, spent 3 months on the phone trying to resolve my problem with them, then got pissed off and asked for my money back and my account to be closed. They refused me a refund even for the months i hadn't used, and my first tech call was within 30 days of the money back guarantee. I was also hung up on twice, when i asked to speak to the manager??, now that is no way to run a company. I suppose i shouldn't have given them all the money up front, but i was taken in by their glossy adds, i'm a sucker like that.
woodylen 02-15-2001, 02:28 PM it was the win2k reseller account i got, £580/year inc VAT. Maybe FAThosts would be a better name??
CoreyC 02-16-2001, 03:21 PM I too was using fasthost until I found this forum
The guy I talked to at donhost was very helpful and answered at least 50 questions in our chat session.
I'm happy so far.
