I'm new to all this and my web host company keep throwing curve balls at me. This one has got me really stumped. I put my website on the net about 2 weeks ago (www.eslkidstuff.com). Since then I haven't added a whole lot to it, but my disk usage on my host's server has increased from about 40% to 75%. I posted a trouble ticket and it was answered "Check your log files". From my understanding, these log files give me some kind of info about people who use my site. That's all I know. What should I do? Should I delete them (somehow??) or download them, or what? Please help as I don't want to pay for more disk space.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Please can you give some more info. Do you mean your available disk space is filling up?
Or are you talking about data transfer?

Possibly, if the space required for you log files is taken out of your allowable space - it is your log files themself which are becoming large.

Log files for even a small site can add up quick, equaling a couples megabytes in no time..

How much storage space is allowed in your hosting plan. I would imagine it is small, if you saw such a large increase (percentage wise) in your used space

hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies! It's my available disk space that's filling up. My hosting plan gives me 100MB of space. I guess I'm probably filling up space quickly with these files - my site is getting nearly 1000 visitors a day, over 10,000 page views. What I need to know is, is there anything I can do about it? Should I delete these log files, and if so, how? Thanks.

switch to a hosting company that doesn't count the log files as part of our account storage space ;)

But really, I guess you can remove these files on a reg. basis to your local computer.

or, if the older log files aren't of much use to you on your server, you could request that they only store one weeks worth of logs for your account (or whatever their log rotation period is)

I guess overall, it really depends on how valuable these log files are to you.

Jay.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've just used FTP Voyager to look at my file details on my host's server. There is a log folder and in there are 2 folders. One is called MSFTPSVC128 (some kind of FrontPage folder?) and contains log files totalling 426KB. The second folder is called W3SVC128 and contains lots of log files totalling 47MB. That's 47% of my disk space. Should I delete these files using FTP Voyager (I don't need the tracking info as I'm using a web tracking page)? I feel uneasy about deleting things from my server, so please let me know. Or, should I get my host company to delete them?

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Deleting a couple of log files shouldn't break anything on your web site. If you're still unsure, download them to your computer first. :)
