xingan 03-28-2002, 03:23 AM any Ip for test?
all content allowed?
cyansmoker 03-28-2002, 03:41 AM Hello,
a few answers including to questions that were PM'ed:
IP address for test: 209.51.157.227 (DV2)
All legal content is allowed.
Server Specs: AMD Duron 1 GHz or P III 1 GHz
Subdomains are allowed, however we may have to add an extra tool if you need them created automatically (we already do creation on demand)
Extra IPs are free but must be justified, see RFC 2050 (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2050.html).
Reselling: got a question about reselling some space/bandwidth...these aren't proper reseller accounts, but you are fee to host other sites on your account. We are expecting a reseller add-on end of April.
Bandwidth is Aleron/Telia and Cogent plus external peering. It is possible that Level 3 will be added soon. The network uptime is advertised as "100%" and we have always advertised 99.5% uptime on our servers.
-Chris.
fantom 03-28-2002, 04:35 AM Hmm... interesting...
few more questions - would you charge change to MX record any extra?
And which versions of php/mysql do you have installed...?
Also, could you send me the signup info for that $35 plan when it becomes available...
cyansmoker 03-28-2002, 06:15 PM Hi,
Q: would you charge change to MX record any extra?
A: no we wouldn't
Q: php/mysql
A: I can't tell you the version of mySQL off the top of my head, however PHP would be 4.0.6 patched to be soon upgraded to 4.1.1.
Signup info: no problem, we are setting up so few accounts on each machine that there is a small delay, you could be set up before Monday is my guess...
Allowed content: BTW, I made a mistake when I wrote that 'all legal content is allowed'. What I meant was 'All legal content is allowed. However, spam and IRC are by no means allowed.' Sorry for the confusion.
Resellers: like I wrote before, a reseller add-on from Ensim is expected by the end of April. But in the meantime, if you wish to resell, you can use our own add-on.
Regards,
-Chris.

Extra bandwidth: I don't know, we didn't design this offer with extra bw in mind, but I'll ask what reasonable rate we can offer (I don't want to promise something now and find our later I was wrong).
Extra space: It really depends how much extra space, since these offers pretty much use an awful %age of our servers HD, that's really a matter of 'do we need more HDs?':D

Subwoofer 03-30-2002, 05:17 AM Im emailing you now, hope there are still spots left!!!
Subwoofer 03-30-2002, 05:23 AM You should try to upgrade the php 4.1.2 since many programs are requiring it now (ie OpenBB). I also just finished emailing you about the $35/mo Plan

Sent you a reply
Yes, you're right about PHP, I will ask what our plans are with 4.1.2, it's just that we have very stable servers and the trade-off is that we always install the lastest stable release. Well, I'm sure we are not the only ones on WHT doing that ;)
Subwoofer 03-30-2002, 06:21 AM Ive been using 4.1.2 for a while now on one of my hosting accounts and its been perfect, no problems whatsoever. 100% stable.
GeorgeC 03-30-2002, 08:15 AM What kind of servers are these, and how many accounts do you anticipate putting on each one?
Thanks,

George, please read the top of this thread, my second message. Let me know what else you need to know.

Since these are "high-resource accounts" we won't mix them with regular accounts, meaning: 2 x $70 accounts or 4 x $35 accounts / server.

-Chris.
GeorgeC 03-30-2002, 08:25 AM Thanks. No mention of RAM though :)

Cyansmoker, getting two of the 8gb accounts would be more benificial than getting one of the 15gb accounts. Just thought you would like to know.
giffy 03-30-2002, 01:01 PM Hi nice plans
Edit: I think we will also offer 8 GB disc space with 75 GB transfer for $35 monthly.
What a about a plan 4gb disc space with 37.5 transfer for $17.5 and i will sign up now !!!
Giffy:D

Hah! Oh well, it's a WHT-only offer, so I think I'll stick with it
Still, good one, Swift.
Giffy, yes but then we would have too many clients to support on a server for us to make any money, here. And we do not wish to offer poor support, that would be bad for our image.
Anyway I'll discuss that with my partners; maybe for another special?
-Chris.
Subwoofer 03-30-2002, 06:57 PM Could you tell me where to sign up? I want to get the $35 package. But one question, could we pay like extra if we wanted to have irc? And do you guys have the Ensim Reseller Suite?
cyansmoker 03-30-2002, 07:25 PM Subwoofer, I orignally wrote this:

When you get one of these plans you get an 100% network uptime guarantee. This is something that can be achieved, among other things, by *not* allowing IRC. We just don't want any DOS attack on the network.
I am sorry that my answer is this, but unless you plan to use some special form or ultra-private IRC, I'm afraid we can't offer this feature.
Regards,
-Chris.
Subwoofer 03-30-2002, 10:07 PM Damn, I highly doubt you would get DoS attacks on your server, but i guess its up to you, nothing really I can do. Anyways, the server I would be on isn't that big, pretty small quite actually, maybe 100 - 200 ppl on it. Also, could you email me the signup page? email: subwoofer@phatalsound.com
Thank You
cyansmoker 03-31-2002, 12:56 AM Hi,
Subwoofer I can send you a URL to a signup page, and you could sign right away to secure an account, however I was informed that there will be a delay and we can start setting up new accounts Tuesday night only.
Let me know if you're willing to sign up *before* Tuesday.
Regards,
-Chris.
Subwoofer 03-31-2002, 02:34 AM Ok, just email me the link please. Ill get my partner to sign up on Monday or Tuesday.
cyansmoker 03-31-2002, 05:53 AM Hi,
our "big hosting" page is here (http://www.hostinggroup.com/demanding-hosting.html).

If we find out that mod_perl ins't installed, we will set it up for you, since we already offer it on our other servers.
-Chris.
cyansmoker 03-31-2002, 08:10 PM Since there's some demand for this, here's what our /basic/until Ensim release their own/yuk/ resellers CP looks like:
cyansmoker 03-31-2002, 08:13 PM Well, I *may* be doomed. Apparently I can't upload any attachment...
So instead here's a link: http://www.hostinggroup.com/reseller_screenshot.gif
-Chris.
cyansmoker 03-31-2002, 08:15 PM Well, that's odd.
cyansmoker 03-31-2002, 08:20 PM With an external link this time:
http://www.hostinggroup.com/reseller_screenshot.gif
Subwoofer 03-31-2002, 09:36 PM looks good, ill sign up soon
and then end users (clients of resellers who use this panel) will see the standard Ensim client panel, or do they see a custom version aswell?
cyberhost 03-31-2002, 10:19 PM Do you allow cron jobs
( I have various small jobs that run for about 100 sec total/day)
cyansmoker 03-31-2002, 10:32 PM End users will see the Ensim CP with all the nice features it offers (we may be biased but we tend to like it better than Plesk when it comes to site level).
Cron jobs are allowed as long as they don't kill the server, of course.
Regards,
-Chris.
Smallworld 03-31-2002, 10:47 PM I sent you an email.
cyansmoker 04-01-2002, 08:05 AM Hi,
since the question keeps coming back:
we will be able to set up the accounts on a "first ordered, first served" basis.
Regards,
-Chris.
Blake Washer 04-01-2002, 03:42 PM I'm currently in a godawful hosting situation with Weinbar so I need to move in the next couple days - your plan is amazing, so much so that I just need some reassurances:
1) Chris, you say you have a 99.5% uptime guarantee - what is that backed by? (Money-back, etc.)
2) What sort of support guarantee - if any - do you provide? (I ask because Weinbar says they have 24/7 e-mail support - which is NOT TRUE.)
3) The signup page says mod_gzip is installed - is all outgoing content automatically gzipped or can it be enabled for all files (currently using mod_gzip on my vBulletin and it's great.)
Man, I just want to jump on this but at the same time my mind says "too good to be true." I've been burned too many times at this point...
cyansmoker 04-01-2002, 05:03 PM Blake, if this helps you feel better:
1) If your uptime falls below 99.5%, we will give you back a prorata of your monthly fee; however if it really falls too low (never happened so far), you get your money back, that's it. Now, there's a 30 days money-back guarantee to help you test our network.
2) There's two different concepts: we offer 24/7/365 monitoring, meaning if you server dies, a technician will take care of it in the following half-hour, not the day after.
Regular support is not 24 hours/day, more like 18 hours/day.
3) We have a policy of alway setting up mod_gzip on our servers, just because we are biased: we like it for our own sites and have never heard a client complain about it :)
Now, regarding this offer, yes it may seem *too good to be true*; actually it would be if it wasn't a WHT-only offer. You'll notice on our site that there's no link to its page, not even in the site map. We are doing this because we know that, at least, we are not losing money on it. It's my idea, and since I spend a lot of time on WHT, I thought it would be nice to have some WHT clients.
The trade-off, for us, is that we must rely on our spendings not going up. I'm not talking about manpower, but servers and bandwidth. Actually the more people we get to sign up, the more strength we have to enforce our current agreements. Nothing spooky here, just regular busines ;)
Regards,
-Chris.

Subwoofer 04-02-2002, 03:18 AM I signed up earlier this night
cyansmoker 04-02-2002, 05:48 AM Hi all,
we already have a lot of signups, I'd advise those of you who haven't signed yet to hurry in they want to be in the first batch ;)
BTW, I was asked a very good question, so here's my answer:
-connections are MULTI-HOMED, which is different from SINGLED-HOMED (obviously) and BACKUP.
MULTI-HOMED: use several uplinks with different carriers, so redundancy is guaranteed
SINGLE-HOME: only one carrier; no matter how many connections you have, if your provider plays dead, your sites cannot be reached any more
BACKUP: (apparently confused with multi-homed, from the question I got) offer connection to a main carrier, such as Cogent, and a backup connection that kicks in if the first one dies. This doesn't protect you if the first carrier is "only" not feeling so well...

-Chris.

On these high-resource accounts, the answer is 'as many as you wish'. However, regarding SSH/FTP accounts, it is your responsibility to ensure that there won't be any abuse.

These are high-resource accounts, so for the HIGH-RESOURCE ONLY accounts ( = not resellers) we guarantee you no more than 4 sites (there can be 2, 3 or 4).
-Chris.
cyansmoker 04-02-2002, 11:16 PM On a sad note: there will be a one-day delay, even for those of you who are on top of the list.
The motherboards received today by the DC are not satisfactory enough, in term of features :(
Sorry about that.
-Chris.
Blake Washer 04-03-2002, 11:49 PM So with that delay factored in when should we start seeing our accounts set up? I need to move in the next couple days :(
cyansmoker 04-04-2002, 12:12 AM Yesterday (Tuesday) we were told we would have the servers "Wednesday".
Today (Wednesday) we're still waiting, not knowing what's going on.
Believe me it's a bad situation for us too :(
We will inform all of you as soon as we KNOW something...
Regards,
-Chris.

We do have 24/7 e-mail support at Weinbar. Our system administrative staff that take care of the shared hosting accounts were having problems with their Internet connectivity - they are located in India and their telco infrastructure isn't the most pristine - their telco circuit has been up and down all week.
I know it's water under the bridge and you have already gone on to greener pastures, but it is true we have 24/7 support.

Does one have control over the dns settings for the domain (ie. can one add an A record or a CNAME)? We currently have servers with RackShack so I was thinking of creating a backup site to handle support requests/mail if our server(s) over there go down, however this would require full access to the domain records.
Thanks
Al

Friday's Update
I just had Jeff (DV2) on the phone. Here's where we are: they just picked 25 servers from the warehouse and as soon as they're back the setup work will begin.
Some servers will be ready tonight, and definitely all servers will be this W-E.
I kow what, for some of you, it's not a problem and you cant wait for your account a couple more days. We want to thank you for your patience.
I suspect that, for others, it must be a problematic situation. If so and you have already ordered an account and you need to search somewhere else -I know our deal can't be beat but I also understand that GETTING your account matters-, so please send me an email and we will refund you; I personnally hope you'll all stick with us of course but I can't ask that too, you've been very patient already :(
I'll let you know as soon as we have the servers ready.
Best regards to you all,
-Chris.
Skydiver 04-06-2002, 02:47 AM Ок, I hope, that all will be in the near future. Thank for the answer:) Yes, nearly has not overlooked - I there have sent still I booze questions by mail - I wait for the answer

cyansmoker 04-07-2002, 05:50 PM Skydiver, do you realize that:
-I chatted with you for at least 45 mns,
-you keep asking the same questions again and again:
--ICQ
--my personal e-mail
--to sales@hostinggroup.com
--to support@hostinggroup.com
--to corporate@hostinggroup.com
--using our web-based information form
--our help desk (!)
--on this forum
50% of these mesages come out as encoded with cyrilic alphabet, which nobody here has any idea how to read,
the other 50% are dang hard to make any sense of.
I am by no means making fun of you but there's an apparent language barrier, and we have a hard time understanding why we should reply to the same questions using ICQ, my e-mail, sales, support, corporate, our help desk and this forum.
Regards,
-Chris.
Skydiver 04-07-2002, 06:06 PM My messages on cyrillics whole 1, rather then 50%
It is Enough was say that can not yet give nothing and I did not touch you. But you keep quiet. And keep quiet already two day. My message on Help Desk: I have sent you the questions the letter. When it is possible to expect the answer? When it is possible to be registered reseller and begin work?
And the whole reason in that that I want to know the real periods.
When we spoke, you have said that end of the week. Already 55 minutes of the monday.

Blake,
I have sent an email to everybody, you must have received it at 'vfor...@.....com', let me know if you haven't.
We have decided to refund everybody until we actually have the servers up and running. You'll then be able to sign up again, but I felt that since there was this huge delay it would be dishonnest to keep your money; moreover you'd be paying for a service you aren't receiving yet.
I want to make it clear that we are NOT cancelling this offer; I know it's a good offer and we WILL deliver it, I gave my word when I started this thread.
I'll let all of you know when the servers are ready.
Kind regards,
-Chris.
DealSpree.com 04-09-2002, 11:01 PM So what is the status...
should i just find another host... or what...
cyansmoker 04-10-2002, 03:43 AM OK,
got all the servers today, all set up with the temporary add-on.
Ensim is patched, and various stuff such as setting up mod_gzip is on the way.
Please bear in mind, before (re) signing up, that it's an excellent offer, but we're a bit swamped here; however we're doing our best to help everybody, and even if the add-on has issues we'll take care of them
There's only a maximum 'n' slots available on each machine; so that's 'n' resellers and 'n' non-resellers (we do not want to mix resellers with high-resource accounts).
I would really appreciate payments via Paypal, if possible. But if you really can't, credit card is ok.
I would like to be able to say that we're not limited to those of you who had already signed up + a handful of new ones, but it's quite a hassle to get new machines set up at this time.
Regards,
-Chris.
DealExpert 04-10-2002, 10:30 AM Thanks for the fast setup last night.
feben 04-26-2002, 06:10 AM Chris I have a client who'd be interested in your $70 package. I was just curious though, if you were still offering this?
