Hi there everyone :)

I have a question, I want to start offering colocation and dedicated servers (I buy them, so not some other ISP and I resell)... And I have a RACK... Now I place the servers in there... Say I want to give a few dedicated 100GB traffic (monthly)... how am I going to monitor this? / cap this?

Do you want to cap or monitor? If you are just monitoring, buy a managed switch (like a Cisco 2900) that supports SNMP. You can then run MRTG/RDDTool against the switch to track bandwidth usage in 5 minute increments.

If you want to kill the line when they hit 100 Gigs (not advisable), you would either need another devise that does that (Packetshaper from packeteer comes to mind), or you would have to write a perl script that would look at the MRTG information, and if the client had 100 Gigs of transfer either sent you an e-mail, or logged into the switch and disabled the port.

$500 on E-bay:

$1800 on CDW:

If you get it off E-Bay, make sure you make sure you get one with Enterprise software.

A demo of a switch? Or a demo of MRTG? If you are looking for a demo of MRTG, visit the MRTG website (www.mrtg.org). If you are looking for a demo of a switch, no I do not.

Ok, your ebay link shows a "CISCO CATALYST 2900 WS-C2924-XL-EN"...

Does that number and those letters matter?

I mean, as long as its 2900 something?
Or DOES it matter?

2924 means that it is a 24 port switch. EN indicates that it has the enterprise edition of the software, which is what you want.

The other numbers are not really germane to your needs.

However, if you are curious, you can view the different types of 2900 series switches on the Cisco website:

DOA = Dead on Arival
Mint condition means nothings wrong its in **PERFECT** condition.
Make sure the sellers has some good feedback from other people with good feedback.

The Enterprise software is what enables SNMP and other features on the 29xx series. As far as installing it if it is not included, you can't download the software from the Cisco web site unless you have a support contract, which will add $500+ to cost of the router, assuming you can purchase the contract seperately (I don't think you can -- but you should check with Cisco to make sure).
