I CAN use wget to get files and ping to 127.0.0.1 but cannot ping another outside IP nor use Red Hat's up2date. Both 'hang' .I am new so don't overlook the obvious for me. I have set /etc/sysconf/networks and /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf

what is wrong??

Unfortunately, that does not really provide us with enough information to troubleshoot. A couple of questions might help isolate the problem:

1. What IP Addresses did you try to get to?
2. Where did you wget files from?
3. What happens when you try to run a traceroute to the IP Addresses you cannot reach?
4. Can you resolve domain names from your server (type: host rs.internic.net)?

Is up2date down or having problems today??

1. What IP Addresses did you try to get to?
ping does not work with any IP or URL except local like 127.0.0.1

2. Where did you wget files from?
wget works from any address that has files

3. What happens when you try to run a traceroute to the IP Addresses you cannot reach?
traceroute does not work on ANY ip or web address just get * * *

4. Can you resolve domain names from your server (type: host rs.internic.net)? [/B][/QUOTE]

YES I can resolve names using host

up2date is working fine for me...it might be a problem between your provider and the up2date server.

Does your hosting provider block ICMP requests, because it is odd that you cannot ping or traceroute anywhere?

provider is rackshack.net. Any more ideas

I need to update several security patches on a restored server and I am away on vac on the worst connection in the world so ftping them all is not feasible at the moment

when I run up2date it either 'hangs' before it says anything or hangs on the retrieving headers line

I have 2 servers at rackshack and I believe I updated via up2date with the other server but it doesn't connect to up2date either now

Have you tried their support chat room/forum, to see if any other customers are reporting the same problem?
