Does anyone have any ideas about where I can advertise my site for free? I really could use any ideas.

Newspapers are a good place to start. Of course, in order to advertise for free, you need to have a pretty decent public relations strategy in place. Think about what it is about your site that would make an interesting story for people in whatever area you want to target. Then, write a compelling article about it that would capture the interest of that market and the publications that service it.

Of course there are no guarantees your story will get picked up (how well do you write, and how well do you understand journalistic style guidelines?), but this is a superb way to generate interest and drive traffic.

Can you think of any ways to advertise online?

For starters, here, in your signature.

You can get some traffic boost with a well-optimized site that by being people friendly is inherently search engine friendly. Otherwise, spend money to make money. Look at different advertising opportunities and ask for cost/benefit analysis on whatever investments you deem worthy of consideration. A well-run online business is not much different from a well-run brick and mortar business.

is there any way to make google (or any search engine for that matter) pick up on my site more often?

Make sure the content is good reading for your human audience - Google bases its relevance as much as possible on how well your information can be internalized by real people (the bot is far from perfect, but this is its goal). Look for sites with related topics to link to you, and return the favor. Again, you do this under the auspices that the places you are linking would be natural for someone interested in your site to go.

Good (X)HTML structure help as well. It's not as important as content, but it can certainly give you a good boost. Use semantically proper markup (<h*> tags for headings, good alt text for images, good descriptive titles in your <title> area, etc.), and try to reduce superfluous markup as much as possible.

If you can do all of those things, you'll have a good head start on search engines. There's more to it than that, but this is a good starting point.

I've noticed that you did this, but also make the link clickable. It makes things easier for the users...:D

Also, do a google search for diecast forums, websites, communities - anything that has daily visitors and a userbase. You'd be surprised how many people will click on your signature/profile link just out of curiousity and end up either buying something or telling someone they think would be interested.

Good luck :D

Great idea, I tried advertising on those site, but they sent me a mean e-mail. Will they get mad if I put something in my signature that will link them to my site?
