View Full Version : Deru buys Weinbar?
Jeffyt 03-26-2002, 09:26 PM Hello,
The colocation company we were planning on going with April 1st (Weinbar) apparently has been recently "acquired" by Deru Internet. I was wondering if anybody here has had dealings in the past with this company. Additionally, do any of you have any positive comments on other Phoenix area colocation facilities that provide Tier 1 Bandwidth. Thanks for your feedback.
Jeff
where did you get this info from?
Jeffyt 03-26-2002, 09:39 PM I got this information from an apparent response to an email I sent to Michael Weinstein at Weinbar this morning from one of Deru's salesmen, Bryan Mertz. I was 5 days out from driving a server to Weinbar, so this certainly changes things for our company. We have clients ready to go live and have no place to put them yet :(
Regards,
Jeff
CagedTornado colos with Deru in their 'B' data center. You may want to ask them about Deru. From my experiences, the network is not that fast as compared to other connections I've experienced. I know everyone likes speed tests and everyones favorite speed test is from ftp.uu.net soooo

StephenRS 03-26-2002, 10:05 PM Well - I've about had enough of Weinbar. Their network quality took a real nosedive since they moved datacenters.
I was willing to forgive the unannounced relocation of our servers (one Sunday at 3:00am they just turned them off and moved them to their new location without notice or opportunity to back them up or even do a proper shutdown of applications).
But the network they are on now stinks. Packet loss, packet delays, etc. They have worked with me, but the fixes only last for a day or two and we never had to spend all this effort on their old network (before the datacenter move).
If you read my old posts on this forum, you will see that I used to rave about how great Weinbar's network was... not it is terrible. Not outages, just "death by 1000 cuts" quality problems.
what dc was weinbar in before they switched, I'm just wondering

Great :( . Gonna have to go searching on my end too. It surely doesn't seem fair to degrade the quality of the datacenter but maintain the same pricing structure (if that's the case).

My additions
================
For the price, Weinbar's network isn't that bad... just compared to what it USED TO BE it really went from a A+ to a C+
I don't have the whole design of their network handy, but it isn't just their outside providers... no matter where I try to test in from I see packet loss. 2% is typical on pings (UDP). I see the same on higher level protocols (3 or 9 second delays on HTTP tests).
At first the problems were blamed on routing of the old subnets, but I currently have one server on old and one on new subnets... I see identical performance problem patterns... leads me to believe the problem goes beyond this... like links too near capacity limits.
I'm sick of trying to explain to them it isn't good as it used to be... they obviously know this and only care that it is "good enough for most".

Your posts are very odd... Here they are talking about you and all you have to say is "I hear the same."
??? ???
StephenRS 03-26-2002, 11:06 PM brandonk:
If you read his old posts, he used to sign his job position and used a @weinbar address (I think)... those are now missing... clue?
Woody 03-26-2002, 11:43 PM It would be nice to hear your side of the story, Michael. Would you like to share? :D
Jeffyt 03-27-2002, 11:04 AM Well, I hate to be the one that brings this back on topic, but I still would like to know of any Phoenix colocation facilities offering Tier 1 bandwidth that would allow as small as a 1u server. A search on this board and on google produce very little in the way of those kind of operations, so maybe they just don't exist. Maybe Deru Internet is the only game in town.
I hate to belabor the point, as most of you are extremely busy, but it sure would be nice to find a location in the next week.
Best Regards,
Jeff
Have you tried http://colosource.com? :)
Jeffyt 03-27-2002, 12:13 PM Thank you, yes I did check out the 21 Arizona "colocation providers" that that resource returned to me. No dice, as most of them were looking to rent 1/2 racks at the smallest. Thanks for the link however.
StephenRS 03-27-2002, 02:23 PM Jeffyt: Phoenix isn't as flexible as LAX. Flights are cheap :)
Pajo or Netfido are great places in LAX (I use them both).
The "Old Weinbar" (Pre February 2002) was great, but I have not found anyone like them in Phoenix.
AffordableColo in Dallas is great too.
So you can east or west... but Phoenix seems to not offer any places with good 1u pricing (Like Weinbar had).
I have to second StephenRS about affordablecolo.com. It's been very stable so far, and the speed and uptime is very good.
I've heard wholesalecolo.com (Florida) also have good price. But again, it's outside AZ. :(

Are they in bankruptcy? There is *nothing* listed on their web site and in press releases, yet nasdaq.com has them listed as being in bankruptcy.
StephenRS 03-27-2002, 11:42 PM exp: I think it was their pending shutdown that lead to Weinbar changing datacenters (read earlier in the thread)...

Yes they are in bankruptcy.
Craig 03-28-2002, 10:28 PM Hate to sound silly but what happend with weinbar?
I thought they were doing really well?
Craig.
Which we were. And thus, made us an attractive company to acquire.
We felt that Deru offered the best solution to our growing problem and hope that things will work out in their new facility.

By that do you mean you had a problem that was increasing in severity or that the growth of your company was becoming a problem?

Our huge Growth problem. We were in nomand's land. Either we were to be bought or we kept things as they are, or we dumped a lot of money in to thecompany to get it to the next level.
THe purchase of WeinBar was the best alternative at the time and we think that it was the best move to make.
Chicken 03-29-2002, 01:00 AM You might send a request to kill this username and re-register under a new one. yes, we'll keep your post count :)
StephenRS 03-29-2002, 01:29 PM is Deru the _current facility_ or is their another move in the works?

Sorry -- I'm just catching this thread now. We're actually in their 'A' space -- which is actually in PureGig's datacenter. (www.puregig.net)
Just out of curiousity -- anyone have any ideas on faster colocation space in the Phoenix valley?
These are the places I've heard of (they both sell in 1U increments, although as far as I know they're not as cheap as Deru):
CyberTrails: http://www.cybertrails.com/
Opnix: http://opnix.com/
Thanks,
Dan

Does Tucson count as Phoenix valley? JK but there are a few decent DC's in Tucson. They just dont really advertise.
clocker1996 03-31-2002, 06:31 AM yeah ive noticed the speeds have gotten slower since the deru move

I could have sworn you were in the B space. When I used to trace to you, you used to goto gw2 while tracing to deru goes to gw. Also, when you were having problems, you mentioned you will colo one level higher or something like that. Maybe things have changed and I didn't notice.
Blake Washer 04-02-2002, 08:49 PM Weinbar has gone to HELL. I'll quit hosting with them once I can get my MySQL database - for the last three days they've been telling me MySQL is up, which it's not - even the damned control panel says it's not. I can generally get one e-mail out of them a business day, if I'm lucky (24/7 e-mail support MY ASS).
Normally I like to be more literate and specific about my criticism, but since my site's had over 50% downtime for the last month and the support team seems to be doing ANYTHING but support you'll forgive me my bile.

Sounds awful.
Thanks for all the help people. I signed up with affordablecolo today (that is if I worked the fax machine properly - damn technology, sheesh).

Jeff
