Hi,

If anyone is still using Red Hat 6.2 based systems, how are they doing? Are you happy with them? Have you tried a RH 7.X system but decided to remain with 6.2 for some or all of your production servers?

What reasons have you decided to stick with RH 6.2 rather than go with the RH 7.X series? The 2.2.x kernel rather than the 2.4.x kernel? What kernel are you using?

Have you found it problematic to keep your systems patched and updated (lib incompatibilities, dependency issues, etc.)?

Thanks for sharing!

The new versions of RedHat are awful. They keep putting in some things no one wants. You should not use an old kernel. Update it as soon as it comes out.

When properly updated, 6.2 is one of the best RedHat version ever released. It is solid and stable. If a newer package from a later version is needed, a simple rebuilding from src.rpm almost always does the job. Also, the *.2 versions usually have excellent quality, but the *.0 versions are usually crap (especially 6.0). The *.1 versions are in between. Some people will only use *.2 version for production servers, and treat *.0 and *.1 as beta version.

Hi priyadi,

While RH 7.1 and 7.2 are most popular, I've heard good things about RH 6.2 updated to the 2.2.19 and later kernels, along with security updates and other needed patches, of course.

I have to wonder if Red Hat's update facilities would, at this late date, work OK bringing a stock 6.2 install up to date security and patch wise. Any thoughts on this?

If you have experience with it, would one likely or typically run into troubles updating the basic, standard web hosting software one uses on a dedicated server box from a stock 6.2 install? Anything to watch out for?

And, overall, would you prefer a 2.2.19+ kernel to a 2.4.XX (latest good) one for a web server?

Thanks. I really appreciate your sharing.

Thank you,

Louis

We love our RedHat 6.2 boxes. It's all we use for production right now. We haven't had any problems installing/building the software that we need.

Actually there was one thing I had a problem with lately. It had to do with the old glibc. Just wouldn't compile on it.

Probably will be working at testing 7.2 and maybe our next server will be 7.2.
