View Full Version : Use PayPal = Lose clients?
.::DefCon::. 03-26-2002, 10:40 AM Hey!
Currently our company is only using PayPal to accept money.
We like the service a lot, and are happy with it, and our clients seem to make no problem out of the fact that they need to get an account with PayPal to be able to host with us.
Now I would like to know if it's worth it to "upgrade" to a "regular" credit card processor, like 2CheckOut.com. Because I know that a lot of people, who have visited your site, and that want to go sign up, often change their minds when they see that the company only accepts PayPal.
We've had no negative experience regarding this whatsoever, signups keep on coming, but I'd like to know if it's really a large number of (potential) clients that we're missing out because of this.
Does anyone have any experience with changing to a new processor and suddenly feeling that sales increase rapidly?
Or has anyone got any idea how big the percentage of potential clients is that you're dissapointing by accepting only PayPal, and that because of this fact refuse to sign up, change their minds and go with another host?
Thank you very much,
Thomas.
2Grumpy 03-26-2002, 10:44 AM Yes, in my experience you will not be disappointed.
Abandoned orders dropped when Paypal was no longer our only way to accept payments by the month.
When I started I used Orderbutton.net (orderbuttons.net?) for CC and Paypal, but orderbutton has a $10 per transaction low limit or they charge and extra $2 processing fee, pretty much rendering useless my $3.95 per month web hosting so Paypal was the only option and accounted (easily) for 80% of my intake.
Now that I have 2checkout and can use them for monthly, easily 75% of the intake goes through 2checkout.
.::DefCon::. 03-26-2002, 10:48 AM Hmm... I figured. Thanks for the reply, Dixiesys, you were just the man I needed this advice from! :)
Any others?
blacknight 03-26-2002, 12:24 PM Before discovering that I couldn't use PayPal properly as a merchant some of my clients complained about the signup process and sent me cheques instead.
However, personally, I think it's a good idea to give people options. If you already have a paypal account, then you have security. If you don't another processor is a lot easier - at least from a client's point of view.
I would go with credit cards. I accept paypal only if they email me and request it, otherwise I don't even mention it. As the person needs to transfer money into their account before they can transfer ... its a lot of steps when you can do it all at once with a credit card.
.::DefCon::. 03-26-2002, 03:20 PM Okay guys thanks for your comments, I think I'll go with 2CheckOut then... ;)
Laterz
ps: you may still post your comments ofcourse, but I think I know what to do now. :)
xharine 03-26-2002, 05:15 PM I think you should keep Paypal as a payment option also, some people do not have credit cards and might prefer Paypal.
tazd9t9 03-26-2002, 05:45 PM I started with PayPal and had a few customers saying forget it when the discovered i could only accept paypal, plus i had a few probs with paypal themselves
.::DefCon::. 03-27-2002, 02:50 AM That's exactly the same as what I experienced!
I get at least 2-3 e-mails a week asking if we had another way to accept payments. :(
Tallon 03-27-2002, 03:41 AM My experience has been different. 75% of my clients use Paypals, the rest is divided between CC, checks, and money orders. I'm using 2checkout for CC's but I'm international so I have to have $600 USD in sales before they release any money. With the majority of clients using paypals, this higher release level really sucks.
.::DefCon::. 03-27-2002, 05:33 AM Huh? 2CheckOut only sends you your money when you've got 600$ ? Please confirm, 'cause I'm situated in Belgium, and that could be a REAL pain in the butt... :(

I'm from the Netherlands, and I believe that 2Checkout is not a reasonable option for international merchants.
I'm thinking to go with Revecom.
.::DefCon::. 03-27-2002, 06:26 AM Err... if I'm not mistaking Revecom charges 30$ or so to send checks to Belgium (& probably to the Netherlands too), PLUS that their support is real slow.
...correct me if I'm wrong 'bout the 30$ ;)
pattox 03-27-2002, 06:56 AM Paypal is fine if youre running a small hosting site like mine but in the long run accepting credit cards will be a great benefit for you and youre customer's,I know i would use 2checkout.com if i had the money:D But if you can afford it then go go go:stickout
kunal 03-27-2002, 12:22 PM well personally, i wouldnt use a service that accepts ONLY paypal payments... i wouldnt trust them... i would want some solid proof and know that they will be there a week later if i need them... paypal just doesnt provide the "secure" feeling to me...
Tallon 03-27-2002, 01:40 PM It's good to have payment options for customers, I won't disagree with that. Having the ability to accept credit cards is a big bonus as far as sales go. I knew that Thomas isn't from the US and wanted to make sure he knew about this non US resident release amount. And I must be blind too LOL, because now that I look again the lowest level is $100, which isn't bad. Who feels like an idiot now?

Hi,
This is an incorrect statement. The "default" release level on the 2checkout Account is at $600.00. This is a user edit field. You can set it to any level you choose, and change it whenever you choose.
The only reason to set this level high, is to decrease the fees you have to pay for Bank Wires.
Checks (cheques) are sent free of charge. Minimum check is $100.00.
If you require more information, send me an email.

.::DefCon::. 03-27-2002, 03:15 PM Thanks for the update Tom! I'm gonna get an account with you guys soon. :)
You do support free cheque sending to Belgium, right?
Thanks
paypaldamon 03-27-2002, 04:32 PM Perhaps I am a little confused, but I keep seeing users mentioning credit card acceptance and PayPal.
Users of the PayPal service can send payment in several ways:
a) from their credit card (have to be a PayPal member)
b) from their PayPal balance
c) from their bank account
Web hosts, or those running subscription sites, can use our subscription feature to do recurring billing.
Is the primary concern (a)? Is that because some of you are losing customers because they have to sign-up for PayPal? From a merchant perspective, there have been a fair number of reports that indicate our fraud rates are less than .50 (online transaction average 1.0+%). The account-based system does help us reduce the probability of credit card fraud to the recipient.
.::DefCon::. 03-27-2002, 04:37 PM Paypaldamon, it's not because of fear for unsafety that I'm searching for alternatives: I think you guys are very safe. You even suspended my account, even though I hadn't done anything wrong :D (no offence; thank you instead: you resolved this problem very quickly for me!)
It's indeed because people need to sign up when they want to pay you. This is a real pain in the a**... :(
But I'm going to keep my paypal account in any way: I need it to pay my server's monthly fee at Saburovo.com ;)
Kind regards,
Thomas. :)
Tallon 03-27-2002, 04:41 PM TomD - That was why I corrected myself in my second post :)
