View Full Version : Name Server Records
MattKD 12-27-2000, 08:12 PM Hi all,
Im a bit confused about Name server records.
The ones I mean are not DNS servers that a domain is mapped to, but actually making it so that people can actually map their domain to my name servers eg dns.me.com and dns2.etc..
I realise I have to set this up on the server, but also have to add records to the Domain registry right?
The Domain I want to do this to (.com) is registered through an OpenSRS registrar, so I guess I will ask them to add the records.
Does anyone know where I would go to add name server records for .co.uk domain names?
Also if anyone has any guidelines\faq sites with info please let me know!
thanks a lot , Matt
Chicken 12-27-2000, 09:11 PM Yes, you have to set them up on the server and then add the records to the Domain registry. The good news is, that OpenSRS registrars provide just about the easiest way of doing this that you'll ever encounter.
Log into your domain, and the last choice will be modify/create a nameserver based on this domain.

OPENSRS RULES!! I just transfered all my domains over to them.

shellx 12-28-2000, 11:07 AM Is it just me, or does OpenSRS not have an option to renew a domain name for a client? I just recently had a client ask about renewing a domain with OpenSRS (first time someone asked this... OpenSRS hasn't been around for too long). I told him he would have to let the domain run out, and then re-register it through an OpenSRS reseller again. I think this is the only draw back with OpenSRS I have ever encountered.
Chicken 12-28-2000, 11:15 AM I remember reading something about this. If they do have a way, it confuses even the resellers of OpenSRS. I don't think they have to let the name run out, but I don't know how it is handled either.
When I log into a domain that I have registered through an OpenSRS registrar, there is no way to extend regisration. Nothing on the main site about it either.
It's not just you.
c0bra 12-28-2000, 11:37 AM Its easy enough. Enter the domain you wish to renew into the "View Domain:" box presented on your main login screen. Alternatively, go to "view active domains" and click the domain you want to renew from that list.
Once you get to the domain page, scroll to the bottom and you'll see the renewal options. Domains can be renewed upto 10 years in advance thru OpenSRS.
Chicken 12-28-2000, 12:05 PM Well, I don't see that when I log in. If that were there, then obviously I'd understand. Choices (these are links):
Manage Profile
You may change your password, create or modify an additional username, or move this domain to a different ownership profile. You can restrict access for the sub-user to allow only certain records to be modified.
------------------------------------------------------------
Organization Contact
This is information about the company or entity which owns the domain name you are managing. Change company information here.
Admin Contact
This is the person or entity who is named as "authoritative" as related to decisions made for significant changes to your records.
Billing Contact
This is the contact responsible for billing issues with regard to this domain's registration. In order to avoid interruption in service, the registration fee must be up to date at all times. This record should be accurate in order to maintain renewal fees properly.
Technical Contact
This is the contact who is considered authoritative for this domain name as related to Web hosting, mail, and other DNS records. This is typically your ISP or Web Hosting Provider but it can be anyone you desire.
Manage Name Servers
Controls which ISP or Hosting company is designated as the primary/secondary name server. If you are unsure of how to use this feature, please refer to your ISP. You can add a username and password to allow your ISP to get in and change your Name Servers for you if you like.
Logout
No method of updating payment method, nor renewing. DOes this vary from one OpenSRS registrar to another? Which one do you use?
c0bra 12-28-2000, 12:18 PM Ahhhh sorry I presumed (like us) you were an OpenSRS service provider? You are logging into the domain management area which doesn't have a renewal option! Its upto the OpenSRS ISP to implement their own domain renewal system.
If you're an OpenSRS ISP then you need to log into your main account administration area (not the domain management area) to perform renewals.

OPENSRS SUCKS!! I just transfered all my domains from them.
Hehe, I'm just kidding :D
Hmm, so is any of the OpenSRS resellers provide this option? I guess the last option would be to transfer the domain to another registrant (i.e. dotster).

<<ADMIN NOTE: Fixed 'dotster' problem>>
c0bra 12-28-2000, 01:10 PM To transfer domains to OpenSRS I presume you must have done this through a registered OpenSRS ISP? I dont believe OpenSRS handle transfer requests directly.
If they did transfer these domains for you, email them and they should be able to provide you a list of participating ISPs who will be willing and able to process renewals on your domains for however long you want.
Otherwise contact the ISP you used to get your domain(s) onto the OpenSRS system in the first place and tell them you want to renew your domain(s).

No I'm not, but I was talking from the standpoint of the end user. Maybe once it comes up for renewal, the'll send out an email of some sort.
