Ok, here's the situation. I've got an external USB HP CD-Writer Plus 8210e that has a buggered up USB connector. I've opened it up, and was wondering if I could throw it into my computer, and replace my CD-Rom (runs at 6x speed).

Now, I haven't checked *yet* to see what connections there are inside the machine, but my plan is to just connect anything that lloks similar to where it should be. I'm guessing (hoping really) that I will be able to just unplug/pulg unplug/plug, etc.

Addl. info in case it is helpful: Says 8200 Series on the CD burner itself on the CD tray. Of course it has a small board attached to it where everyting neatly fits into the back of the burner, with various little doo-dads on the board. Looks to be easy to seperate from the board though.

Something odd: On the box, it says it is a 4x write, 4x rewrite, 6x read though once I opened it, the sticker on the unit says 4X/4X/24X IDE Cd-Recordable/Rewritable Drive. Go figure.

Anywhoooo.. would this work or is this disaster in the making (before I tear open the computer (which is actually a server, which is why it has a 6x CD-Rom in it now).

Help! I asked my ICQ list and about 1/2 said it would work, the other 1/2 said it wouldn't. :(
