My Opinion,

Rate 1-10

Server Uptime (7)
Support (6)

Control, panel is somewhat buggy when you click for instance on "Billing" icon you get taken to reviews page.(Happend on my cp.)There customer support is not all that great, takes a while to get a response to billing questions.

They are "okay." They are my first webhost since I got screwed over by DigitalRice back in 2000 (when I was a newbie and didn't know better about hosting). I've been with them since May of 2001, and they host my second domain. I signed up with them because there were so many people I knew who used them. I paid for a year by money order. Since I didn't pay by credit card I had to wait a bit, but posting on their message board a few days later got my account set up; quick and painless.

From the beginning everything was...well, not bad, but annoying, I guess. My account was on one of those unstable servers and that server had to be rebooted constantly. But now things are much more stable, so there have been no more reboots, thank goodness.

However, about three months ago, I'm estimating, the servers would have temporary outages for about 1-2 minutes. I think that has cleared up now, but I remember being really frustrated when I was trying to post on my message board or write a long-winded journal entry and as I was posting I would get a DNS error. Some people get database errors, but I've only experienced that once or twice.

The biggest gripes people seem to have with them is that support did not seem to resolve issues properly. They say that they don't read the trouble tickets properly and their answers are a bit "rushed" (four or five worded responses). Another gripe people have is that they might double-bill you on your credit card. In addition, on HR's message board, negative threads are deleted, but most times it's clients having the same problems. Accounts should be resolved through the trouble ticket system. In addition, if you search the threads here at WHT, not too long ago their 3rd party billing system was jeopardized, and that pissed alot of people off.

My experiences with support have been relatively good. I used to post at the message boards and Brendan or another tech person would help me out. I've actually never used the trouble ticket system, believe it or not!

My latest problem with HR was that they've suspended my account for "excessive Apache usage" or something like that. I was really angry when I found out, because my domain isn't even that popular, and I'm only using three or four scripts. But luckily the tech guy unsuspended my account and I went and removed any possible offending scripts. It might have been Ikonboard 3 (which was a test board and unused). Also one time I logged into phpMyAdmin and one of my databases disappeared for some odd reason. But other than those two mishaps, all is good now.

Do I recommend them or not? Well...judging by this review most people would say "no." But I've found that HR customers fall into two categories: those who hate the service to the extreme, and those who love the service to the extreme. I find myself in the middle, leaning towards "unsatisfied customer." I do not need much support, my domain is relatively small. So long as the server doesn't get any more reboots or is down for an infinite number of hours, I'm okay with it. If I could rate them, I'd give them a "C" rating.

If you have a small site, and are not in need of much support, then try them out for two weeks, is all I have to say. I think my experience with HR and WHT really expanded my experience when it comes to webhosts, so I'm thankful for that.

What kind of access do you need for your server?
