Hi,

Just a minute ago I was logged in (as admin, not root) through telnet to my box and was working on some stuff when i suddently got this message:

Broadcast message from root Wed Dec 27 14:23:03 2000...

The system is going down for system halt NOW !!

Anyone know what the reason for this could be?

someone was looged as root and did it or someone at your NIOC hit the 'halt' button on the RAQ.

You can't halt a cobalt from its GUI.

If it was a linux box and not a raq it sounds like someone just did a cnrtl alt del

Yeah,

someone must have done something with the keyboard cause I did "last -10" and noone except me has logged in. Also I'm the only user added to the server at the moment.

wierd..

You happen to have a 4webspace RAQ? Our 4webspace server rebooted nearly 10 hours ago without us being aware of it.

Yes!
Mine shows exactly 9h 50m uptime..

Well looks like they must have been performing some maintenance then. It would be nice if they could send a message out to their customers when they do this so we know whats going on.

I know when I first saw the server had rebooted without me doing it, I was worried either 1) someone had gained unauthorised access or 2) one of the cobalt updates had messed the server up.

Exactly! Those thoughts were running through my mind as well. I turned to one of my linux guru friends and he told me to do the "last -10" command etc.. That made me feel a lot better since it showed no sign of any unauthorized access. An email from Tera-byte.com would have been very good and in place.

They didn't tell you about the spontaneous rebootilation?

Just kidding :)

The same exact thing happened to me, I blasted off an email to tera-byte or to steve or to both, cause I was also concerned that someone either on the outside had access or someone at tera-byte was screwing with my server, I have heard stories of other companies that have been caught storing personal files on peoples servers, I stress that other company was NOT tera-byte.

Anyway, got back a fast response from Steve telling me that it was them, they were upgrading some electrical panel to accomodate the cobat servers that they had or were adding or something, it was a while ago that this happened, last week or the week before.

Cheers,

My server has been fine just checked it - been up since 16th december.

Im not sure where you folks are looking to see how long your servers have been up, but I checked a couple areas on mine, and it said up since 9 hours and something minutes, this seemed strange to me since I rebooted the server like 40 minute prior, so Im not sure when this updates or what happens, but it's not very accurate right out of the gate, it seems to me anyway.

i checked both in the raq3 admin panel, via telnet 'top' and used this script at http://www.reedmedia.net/projects/systemstatus/ all the same for me :)

On the system status script what are you using for your path to your httpd_log file?

I use
/var/log/httpd/access
but it causes an internal error
I omit any log file and it runs but without all the access information.

What did you put in there?

Use the 'uptime' command in telnet for an accurate picture of how long your server has been running since the last reboot.

I emailed Tera-byte and Steve responded this:

all servers do seem to reboot spontaniously from time to time but that could
have been us moving your server as we are running to get them all set up .

Damn, I bet they are running, with a price of just $99.00 they must be overloaded with orders. I've never been happier with a server since I ordered from 4webspace.com

Sorry, just had to put out some praise, cuz I feel so good about tera-byte and 4webspace

i wish the guys at tera-byte can take some pictures of all the the raqs being hosted so everyone can see how the raq's are all setup and stuff. that would be way cool...just like how vdi has pictures of their noc and stuff.

Yeah, that would be cool ;)

I am totally satisfied with my RaQ3 and Tera-byte/4webspace so far. One thing that could make all this better would be if they could make some kind of tutorial/faq page with the most common problems.
