View Full Version : Strange delay excuses!

Howdy all,

i've been waiting for sometime to transfer my domain onto a new host (1and1) from myacen as they had real server problems a couple of weeks ago and I've been waiting a hell of a time for the transfer to take place and each time I hope it will be OK, I'm hit by what I'm hoping isn't an excuse.

I've owned a few domains in the past and moved hosts a couple of times in the past and never has it taken more than about 3 days.

So far, I've had the following (bearing in mind I registered and got my account log in/confirmation with 1and1 on the 15th Mar ...

1. My domain can't be transferred without the new host sending me a transfer form in the post and me signing and faxing it back to them so they can fax it to my exisiting host to confirm the transfer request.

-- I can appreciate the need for this but it seemed a bit silly having to do paperwork to transfer a web domain. Is this the correct procedure and my new host are correctly asking for the paperwork ?

2. I registered my domain on 04.02.02 (4 feb) and as it's a .com domain, I am unable to request its transfer until 60 days after the initial registration which means I am not able to transfer my domain for at least another week and a half.

-- Is this also true? It seems a long delay to transfer something I own!?

If anyone could point me in the right direction and confirm that my new host are simply being a good host and doing everything correctly or simply wasting my time and ensuring my site is down for what will be nearly a month when the 60 day period above is completed I'd be most grateful as I've never come across these things!

Many thanks

James.

I would contact them immediately, it sounds to me like they think you are trying to transfer ownership or registrars of your domain to the other host. These are FACTS.

1. Paperwork is not required to change the DNS servers on a domain record. (But it is very often required to transfer ownership and registrars.)

2. You can change the DNS servers on the domain record 50 times in the in the first 60 days if you want to. (But if you want to transfer registrars, and I believe ownership, you can't.)

All you need to do to move to another hosting company is to modify the DNS server info on your domain record.

I'd hoped this would be the case, just to confirm, I already own the domain and simply want to transfer it from myacen to oneandone.co.uk hosting keeping the name/ownership details etc just moving from space I had at myacen to space I've bought from oneandone.

So what they're saying isn't exactly correct?

(Thanks for the speedy reply :))

It would probably help, when speaking to your registrar, to refrain from using the word transfer.
You don't want to transfer anything.
You want to modify the DNS information for the domain.

All you should need to do is change the name servers to your new hosts.

James. Looking at their website, they do indeed want you to transfer the domain to them. Most hosts just give you a pair of name servers to update you domain record so that it points to the new site.

You may still own the domain name after transferring to them but you'll have to pay them for the renewal when the time comes, and it is not clear from their site how much that will be.

Their hosting package doesn't look that great. I'd go somewhere else, and keep the domain where you want - keep the domain registration separate from the hosting arrangements.

I agree with Brookie,

IMHO, you should keep the domain name registration company separate from the company that you use to host it.

I believe that it gives you much better control over your domain name should everything hit the fan at the hosting company. You can simply get a new account with a different hosting company and then change the name servers with the domain name registar.

I've had good luck with www.stargate.com and I really like their control panel. The $8.85 annual price ain't hard to take either.

Best of luck,

Keith
