Last time I was interested in a dedicated at http://Rackspace.com the servers were very expensive compared to the compo. I now see the basic Linux package is only $195 month. .

Considering their excellent service, would you recommend getting a server with them now at this level?

Cheers,

Bob.

How much bandwidth is that?

30 GB per month.

Rackspace periodically emails out special offers to their mailing list for servers using older hardware (presumably hardware which is no longer being used by the original customer); those get down around the $150 mark.

If you don't need much in the way of bandwidth -- beyond the 30GB, rackspace charges somewhere around $2.50/GB -- then rackspace is certainly worth considering.

Yeah, they are certainly a realistic alternative now. The only possible problem is upgrades. I couldn't get a clear answer in regard to any incremental rental price if upgrades are performed. So if I upgrade to extra 120mb memory, pay the install would I purchase the hardware within the upgrade cost and that's it, or not pay for the hardware instead pay a higher monthly rental. The website says one thing, sales say another.

Any rackspace customers here can make this clear?

Cost are mounting...

You only get a low 650mz processor and 1 (!) IP.

They highly encourage you to use your own name server, so that 2 extra IP's needed -$5.00 month - sort of a sneaky hidden charge really.

I've been with Rackspace for just over 6 months now and I've been extremely happy with them. The one thing I like about them is their My.Rackspace.com control panel, where you can look at bandwidth usage, look at accounting, submit support tickets etc, and also you can manage your domains using their nameservers. It's very easy to use, and it's always been online for the pass 6 months, 100%.

Just my thoughts :).

I've been with them for five days now. Absolutely amazed at how much time they're willing to spend on the phone with me. I'm new to webmin so they had to walk me thru every feature. THANK YOU SUPPORT TEAM C

Anyhoo, on to your question. Rackspace has told me numerous times that they prefer me using their nameservers. In the beginning I wanted my own. They have it set up in my.rackspace.com so we can easily point our domains so theirs recognize them.

Rackspace is one company that you cannot claim is out to screw anyone. They care more about their customers then any others I've been with. The support is just ridiculous. I've called them at 3:am and spent an hour on the phone with them. Sure they cost more, but you're getting every penny worth if you rely heavily on uptime and tech support like me. There is no one better PERIOD!!

Okay, I guess they do recommened using your own nameservers. But I've been happy using Rackspace's nameservers :). They've got enough support staff to be able to answer the phone lines, it's literally 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Thanks for your experiences. I've taken the plunge and joined them specially after striking a deal with a salesman there. A very good start indeed!

It was a big plunge for me too, but boy what a feeling knowing I'll never have to switch again. Also glad to see you got a deal.

I got a server from a company that frequently post on WHT. I was unable to get an answer about more IP addresses. I sent 4 emails in 12 days and still no answer. I took advantage of their 30 day money back policy. I then went to RackSpace and paid twice as much. I've never been sorry. They reinstalled Linux on my server on Christmas Day. My sites have never been down in 4 months. You only get what you pay for. If service is important to you, RackSpace is an excellent value.

Yes. I agree. I have managed a dedicated server for a client for 6 months there. No doubt their prices are higher, but the service is higher as well.

I got a free Rackspace T-shirt as well :D

Actually, the T-shirt was from what I can tell a one time offer that appeared on their site through a pop up window. It wasn't targeted at existing customers per say, but anyone who saw it and filled out the form.

I got mine too, it was completely the wrong size, but I couldn't see myself wearing a Rackspace t-shirt or any dot-com t-shirt :).

Yes, I think it was part of a survey they did a while back, they offered a free t-shirt for doing it.

Rackspace do the questionnaires from time to time, they always give the $10 Amazon gift certificate for doing it, which I always like. From the time being with them, I've had two of those gift certificates now :).

Good choice in joining RackSpace - I just got a server there too - very pleased so far. As for the Tee-shirt issue, the UK arm was doing a survey via a pop-up box, not sure it's still there but it was 4 days ago and I was lucky to get the TS :D
