Okay, I have always heard (and the UPS companies tell you not to do it) that you should never plug a UPS into another UPS and so on....

Why? What will it really do?? Anything bad??

The reason I am asking is because my father-in-law lives on a farm where they have a pre-planned power outage every three months for 6 hours. He wants to be able to keep a few of his household things running for six hours and can do it with a bunch of the APC UPS 650's.......buying a bunch of them is cheaper than a generator or a large UPS.

So, if he plugs a bunch of UPS's into each other......what might happen??

Thanks!

why buy a generator? just tear a diesel truck engine out of a truck and convert it to a generator :), you must admit... if you pulled that off it would be really cool

Any other comments?

Buy a UPS that allows you to add external batteries. Then add the batteries you need to get the UPS backup time you require.

I have seen this happen before in some small out sourced officers some of our contractors were there designing sites for...

I walked in an as usual i request to see the server room and saw these small (30Min) UPS plugged like a daisey chain...

It was not running yet so i waiting till they booted it up and tested it!

The fuses went first with the power supply of the fibre channel swtich...

I remember in a trade show somewhere i saw UPS That can do this...

The best way i believe is to buy a bigger ups to be sure... bigger batteries this and that is just going to cost more in the long run from experience...

Good luck...

And the Truck engine is an excellent idea! Hay you dont even have to rip it out! just park real close to the place!
