View Full Version : HitBox.com spamming!

Ok, this is starting to get on my nerves!

I signed up for a hitbox account to keep track of the activity on one of my sites and for once in my life (how much I regret it now) I checkes yes -:bawling:- on the newsletter question!

Now since then (less than a week) I have recieved about 100 copies of the same HTML newsletter! They seem to be coming once every 2-3hs. The funny thing is they all have the same date and time.

So I went to their webpage when I only had recieved 6 copies and emailed their -ironicly- abuse department. No answer! 2 days later I was up to about 30-40 copies when I decided to email them again. Still no Answer!

I also went back to their webpage and checked no for newsletter.

Has anyone had an experience like this with a bigger company? Is is possible to sue them for spamming?

Thanks,
Saeed

It is possible, but its not worth it, it would cost more in lawyer and court cost then it would be worth, exp. since all you have to do is delete them its not causing you much time or any out of pocket expense, but trust me I know how spam can make you furious. Might be more worth it to print out all the copy you got, make about 5000 copys of them, and then fly down to their offices and throw them all over the CEO's office.

Yeah, I was going to reply to each and every copy and have it sent to all the emails I could find on their webpage. But I got bord halfways.. :smash:

This is what I do. Set up a filter to forward the newsletters to abuse@hitbox. Also make sure your filter deletes the message as well. They'll get the point :)

I did this with mailbits (something like that), and I'm not sure if I still get them (filter works wonderfully), but if I do, they get them too!!!

Sue? Whoah... As frustrating as spam is, don't you think sueing is a little extreme?

The only cases I can think of where you might consider sueing for something like that is if you were offended by the content of the e-mail or it was a deliberate attack to inconvenience you. And in both of those cases only if the spam was persistent.

Zolbian - It's probably just a technical glitch or something, but do you really think spamming them back is going to help? (Think of how frustrated you are, then how frustrated they must be with the spam you're giving them, and then their willingness to help when they're that frustrated). Is it possible that you signed up for several accounts accidentally (like pressing the submit button a few times because the page was slow at the time...)? If so, you might have been added to their mailing list several times.

I do sympathise, however, and it is pretty slack that they haven't rectified the situation.

Chicken,

That sounds like a good idea ;) Although I'm not sure if there is such features in Netscape Messanger!

Lawrence,

I really don't think I would need any help from them since I have my account and thatīs pretty much about that! Yes, I pressed only once. I'm thinking itīs a technical problem too. It would have been nice if they would have answered one of my 2 emails, or why not send an email out to all users who got spammed and let them know theyīre working on it or something.

Kunal,

If you're going to look at it that way Yes, I did subscribe for the newsletter, but when I found that it ment 40/day I unsubscribed the next day.

Yeah, I seem to be getting about 15 copies of that newsletter every day. I get one every hour or so.

What pisses me off is that I'm expecting important emails and I always keep my email program running. So it automaticly checks email ever 5-10 minutes and plays a small sound if I recieve email. So every time I think maybe itīs the emails I've been waiting for. But 95% of the time itīs the annoying newsletters.

I'm not familiar with Netscape Messanger, but if you check the help contents and type in either 'filters' or 'message rules' you should be able to find something, hopefully.

Let's get one thing straight. It is not spamming. Spam is unsolicited bulk e-mail. You solicited it. It therefore, cannot be spam.

Duster,

so what youīre saying is that just because I said itīs ok for them to sent me newsletter that gives them the right to send me 110 (and increasing) in 5 days?

Anyways, I just recieved an email from their support saying they removed me from their list. Lets see how long the newsletters will keep coming.

Saeed, not quite. The real definition of spam (as Duster points out) and what HitBox is doing is quite different. With HitBox, they simply don't understand newsletter practices; as a result many Net ppl are quick to point it out as spam.

I do however have a term for such newsletter problems : company hari-kiri (suicide).

The newsletters are still coming (I've lost count). The wierd thing is they are all from the same date and time. Like if they sent a couple of hundred newsletters at the same time and they keep coming.

Is it a pop account to which they are sending this newletter to? if it is, goto any free web-based pop checker and delete the newsletter. Sometimes, the mail from the server gets downloaded, but never gets deleted from the server, so you keep getting the same email again and again.

Give it a shot.

Actually my email provider has an "delete old emails" button on their page which I used a couple days ago. The emails still keep coming. I have about 120 copies of that newsletter now.

In Outlook Express, from Tools > Message Rules... route all sends from them to the Deleted Items folder.

Errr  ..trying to be cool, hehe

I refuse to use Outlook Express with so many security holes that program has. Every other week you can read in the computer news that they have found a new way to run macros or whatever.

And for the record, the only stupid thing I've done is to bother answering you!

etLux, you are a nasty man, HOWEVER, you deserve not to have your feelings too badly hurt.

I'm not sure if it's allowed here, but I'd like to commend you on the fabulous contribution your own site has made to several of my customers lately. (and therefore me indirectly)

By the way, several are being threatened to pay the ape under threat of site suspension...

Saeed, ignore him. He's a silly old fart!

This is absolutely true. I thought everyone knew this already; however, it surely bears repeating.

Just wanted to let you know that their emails stopped coming after about 120 emails. Their support people were pretty nice and helpfull and answered within a couple of hours (not the first email though, I guess that was christmas day, so..).

Anyways... Things are back to normal and Saeed is happy again :D
