HostingDiscussion.com is looking to launch a brand new service to benefit the web hosting industry. Web Hosting Industry Index monitors fluctuation of prices in proportion to web space and bandwidth. Those indexes are dynamic and real-time, and are based on verified packages submitted by web hosting companies in different markets.

All information registered remain anonymous, except for raw data: web space, bandwidth and price charged.

Will you be cross comparing uptime, server type, page load speed, ping, data transfer speed, data center, tech support reaction time, price and server space to give a more accurate comparable index?

Or will you only base it on price and server space and assume all other aspects are the same?

In regard to your first point, Web Hosting Industry Index is not meant to compare anything. It is meant, similar to stock market system, provide index "averages". These averages will be based on continuously updated information: existing current offers hundreds, and, hopefully, thousands of web hosting companies provide. These indexes (or averages) are the web space and bandwidth, the two most fierce units of competition.

The value of service is in pure information of the latest market average offers and average market price that is being charged for certain products. That is true for every hosting type in various global markets.

Regarding your second part, I do not necessarily see how I could provide a comparison on uptime when information about hosting companies is private and is used exclusively to calculate the indexes. However, the list of potential comparison centers is a great start to start modeling Version 2 of this Web Hosting Industry Index.

Somewhat yes. So far I will only base it on three variances: web space/bandwidth and average price charged. I understand a bigger issue that exists for hosting types like dedicated, VPS or even shared hosting. Server specs are different, the infrastructure of each company might be different. However, since information is constantly updated, and assuming the market uses relatively same server hardware/software (only a limited number of them is used) we could predict that those averages will be accurate when hundreds of companies take part on this venture - the sample error will decrease with every additional company submitting their packages.

In closing, I really hope the information provided by this service is going to benefit web hosting company. If 1 company considers the information useful, this is a success.
