View Full Version : Is there such thing as a Good Free Host?
Ryan23 03-23-2002, 01:03 PM Is there such thing as a good free host? I mean a host that lets you use CGI and SSI and still give you like 100MB? I mean there are billions of sites out there giving you 100MB. www.0catch.com, freewebz.com, etc. But not CGI. The closest one so far is www.hostultra.com and they only give "unmetered" space and bandwith, but the CGI and FTP access is "coming soon" does anyone know a good free host? post it and I will read about it.
Stream 03-23-2002, 01:07 PM i don't think there is much chance of getting that for free :)
sn0rtin 03-23-2002, 04:08 PM I too have looked for a good free host for quite some time. There are a few descent ones: freewebsites.com, port5.com, tripod uk (much better then the us tripod). However, none of these meet the specs that you are looking for. Even if you were to find a free host that offered all that they wouldn't be around long enough for you to take advantage of their services.:buck: I've given up on the free host search:bawling:, and from what I see, you probably should also. After all, paid hosting isn't that expensive, and you get a lot more. You'll most likely be able to find what you are looking for for under $15/mo.
mdrussell 03-23-2002, 04:20 PM We hosts have to pay for servers, pay for bandwidth, pay our staff, infact, we have to pay all our overheads! So its not economical to offer hosting for free.
phpjames 03-23-2002, 04:34 PM You get what you pay for!
ReuvenNY 03-23-2002, 04:43 PM The answer is definite YES. There is a good free host with all the bells and whistles! By the way, I am selling the Brooklyn and Golden Gate bridges.. Wanna buy??
Your best bet is to find a friend who has a domain and is willing to share a bit of space with you. Although this site is aimed at girls, pick-me.net is a good start.

;)
Ryan23 03-23-2002, 05:32 PM Ok so I guess there isn't. I wanna pay but I don't have that kind of money for a good host. I want you to take a look at this site, tell me what you think of it. I am hosted by them now, www.dqhost.com I wanna hear your responses, plus its free :) Nothing wrong with it except that you only get put files up to 5MB no more.
ReuvenNY 03-23-2002, 05:37 PM If you have $9.95 a month, try alwayswebhosting.com. I host with them, very fast server, great service and a lot great features.

http://www.hypermart.net has CGI, SSI, SSL and some other stuff but only 50MB space and requires credit card to signup

There is a free host in sloavak at http://www.host.sk with
Unlimited Space
Unlimited Bandwidth
PHP
MySQL
WAP/WML
NO ADS
Incognito 03-24-2002, 05:59 PM There is a square room occupied by 4 people - one in each corner.
In one corner is a rather stupid web customer.
In the second corner is a good free web host.
In the third corner is E. T.
In the fourth corner is an unlimited bandwidth provider.
There is a pot of gold in the middle.
Who gets the gold?
ckpeter 03-24-2002, 08:46 PM Ryan23,
If you really want free hosting, start thinking. You have to give host a reason to host you for free. If your site is interesting, try posting a request in the request forum. A few hosts may be willing to host you just because your site is interesting.

equiller 03-24-2002, 09:25 PM The only free host I can support with a good conscience is Portland. I use them occasionally with sites I don't want to waste my space with or on design projects. They have a decent speed and good features, you can even host domains there. Of course, don't expect the best uptime (I would say I get about 95% uptime on average, and it has been getting a lot better in the last year) and their support team doesn't really exist. However, they offer both PHP and Perl 5.x along with mySQL and their unofficial member support site (http://portal.portland.co.uk) is great.
Check them out: http://www.portland.co.uk
BadBoy 03-25-2002, 02:52 AM Megspace.com is good hosting, they have nice uptime etc,the only thing that they dont have is good support when my friend was trying to build a site with them they never offerd support.Just one popup a visit and the rest are banner ads.

SLOW
REALLY OLD PHP 4.0.0
ONLY 100MB BANDWIDTH
THEY DELETE SITES FOR NO REASON
FTP ISN'T WORKING RIGHT AT THE MOMENT
MYSQL THROWS UP SOO MANY ERRORS
IF YOU EVER GET A RESPONCE FROM SUPPORT ITS USELESS LIKE 'PHP 4.0.6 won't compile on AIX.
BAD UPTIME
I think thier servers are PMMX 166MHz as they are offering PMMX 166MHz servers to anyone that will pay for them and I assume they use them also for hosting

Agreed on every point. It's free, what more do you want. If you have a small site and know sort of what you are doing already, things will be fine. The member portal is great with technical support, but Portland's support is terrible. Once again: you get what you pay for. If you don't want to pay, then this is one of the best solutions...
.::DefCon::. 03-25-2002, 10:04 AM Best thing to do is post a request for free hosting in the Advertising section. :)
Snow White 03-25-2002, 11:51 AM free host such as Tripod does support cgi and ssi. No php though.
CGI is limited scripts they allow, for their free accounts.
Hope this is helpful.
