I am kind of new to this. I am thinking to purchase a server and send it over to a colo provider. I am hoping someone could give me answers to the following questions.

1. What sort of things would you be looking for with colo provider? What kind of question would you ask them?

2. Exactly what do you need to provide when colocation

a. Rackmount server (Obvious)
b. Insurance??
c. Switch??
d. Rackmount Slide Rail ?
e. Anything else?

3. What would you watch out for when colocation a server?

4. Whats the best way to deliver a machine to colo provider when you are unable to deliver the machine yourself? I mean I heard some horrible story about UPS delivery. How can you avoid server getting damaged during the delivery. Basically I am planning to order a server online and have it delivered straight to the colo provider.

5. I am thinking about remote reboot. Could someone point out what hardware component is required? I have been looking around a few online server shops. But non of machines seems to come with APC thing..

All comments are welcome.. Thanks in advance!

1. What sort of things would you be looking for with colo provider? What kind of question would you ask them? You should ask questions that are important to your business; what type of connectivity do they have, how do they handle support, how financially stable they are, etc.2. Exactly what do you need to provide when colocationGenerally, your server (of course :)), any rack rails you may have and a power cord. That should be about it for most places.3. What would you watch out for when colocation a server? Make sure you feel comfortable with the company you choose and one that has a good reputation. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.4. Whats the best way to deliver a machine to colo provider when you are unable to deliver the machine yourself? I mean I heard some horrible story about UPS delivery. How can you avoid server getting damaged during the delivery. Basically I am planning to order a server online and have it delivered straight to the colo provider. We get servers via USPS, UPS and FedEx all the time without any challenges or problems. Insurance on the package is a good idea.5. I am thinking about remote reboot. Could someone point out what hardware component is required? I have been looking around a few online server shops. But non of machines seems to come with APC thing.. You should not need one if the provider you are looking for offers 24/7 support. If you are interested in getting one, take a look at the APC Masterswitch.http://www.apc.com/products/category.cfm?paramcategory=Power%20Distribution&prod_type=PDU&web_displayed=all

Hope that helps!

Yup,

I'd second the idea of insurance. I just had a $4000 dell server go missing during delivery, so you never know.
