Hi,

I just recieved my account information to access Tera-bytes DNS server.

What I did is I added:

domain.com -> 1.1.1.1
A www -> 1.1.1.1
NON Matching -> 1.1.1.1

1) I tried to add another A record for wildcards but it didn't show up. I entered "*" in the text field.

2) When I go to register.com and check my domain it shows Tera-bytes DNS servers, but when I type in my domain (with and without "www.") in IE it doesn't work. Is there anything I need to change in the .conf files to get this working?

3. I installed the POPbeforeReply (got link from forum). When I do "mail name@mail.com" and try to send it don't send. Is this because the DNS is not working yet?

4. Is the POPbeforeReply enough to have a working POP3 account?

I'm sorry if some of these questions have already been answered or you feel are way to easy. I'm new to linux administration and trying to learn. I have to say this forum has A LOT of usefull information.

Thanks,
Saeed

Note: Only thing POP auth. does is allow you to *send* email through the server (assuming your ISP doesn't bugger up that plan by not allowing you to). It has no effect on receiving messages.

so is there a POP3 already installed?

Both POP and SMTP should already be installed. Anything added to your server is only for security measures.

Thanks,

What about the DNS? I have regiesterd it on one of the OpenSRS sites and if register.com shows the correct DNS information, doesn't that mean that the DNS has been updated?

Seems to be a few that are confused about DNS for their servers. If you've written that DNS tutorial, shoot me or post the URL so that we can refer to it por favor.

I emailed noc@tera-byte.com a little whike ago with some questions that i have. The DNS thing is a little confusing.

To make it short I have 2 domains pointed to tera-bytes DNS servers, lets call them domain1.com and domain2.com. When I do whois lookup on domain1.com, all except networksolutions show tera-bytes DNS. When I do whois on domain2.com all show tera-bytes DNS but when I type in the URL on the browser it goes to my old host. domain1.com gives DNS error.

I'm guessing I just need to give it more time.

Correct.

Wooohooo!!! My main site is working!! :D

Whatīs I'm wondering now is:

1) How do I add a virtual site?
2) How do I add subdomains to the main domain. Cause on the Tera-byte DNS page I can't add the main domain to the DNS Admin. Do I need more IP for this?

I think your best bet is to compile a list of questions you have and email them. Overall the interface is pretty intuitive. You might want to check out Cobalt.com and read up on how to do the basic things (download the pdf manual).

Thanks,

I already got the subdomain thing working. I found the information at http://www.apache.org

Since this is a DNS thread I thought I ask another question, hope you don't mind.

I've ordered one block on IPs from tera-byte and they've sent me email telling me that the new IP's are routed to my server.
What I did is logged into the DNS control panel and changed the IP of one of my sites (added a new IP). Then I logged into the admin part of my site and changed the IP of my site so it would match the one in the DNS control panel. Now my question is, does it take time for the tera-byte's DNS server to update (if so how long usually?) or have I forgot to do something?

Thanks,
Saeed

We got sent 4 ips i think it was 4 anyway and to test them i just setup fake domains and all ips were active within seconds of being setup on the server.

Oh!.. Then I'm probably doing something wrong..

I recieved an email from tera-byte saying my IP's are like 111.111.111.111/27 with my first 111.111.111.112. To be honest I have no idea what that means.

Could anyone please explain what that means and where I go from there?

Thank you,
Saeed

Thanks,
I got it and just replied.

I was wondering, when i do DNS lookup on my main server domain it returns the IP, but when I do DNS on the IP it won't return the domain name.. why is that?

I'm not sure.. but I think you need to send in a reverse lookup something. haha. If no one replies with the correct way on doing it, I'll ask a friend of mine and see if he can tell me and I'll post it here.

Dim8, thanks bro.

I updated to my new IP's on the tera-byte DNS panel. Now when I type in the IP in the browser the site works but when I do the domain it goes to my main site. I submitted the changes about 4-5hs ago.

My question is, is the changes supposed to happen right away or do they take some time (if so how long?).

Thanks,
Saeed

PS. I have this wierd feeling I have already asked this question on this board but don't seen to be able to find it. It doesn't help that half the people post in dedicated area and the other in the RaQ area and some even in the technical.. Makes it hard to keep track of everything.

updates to any dns record ususally takes 24-72 hours to propagate. give it some time and everything should work.

Hmm, are you sure?
The domain is already pointing to the tera-byte server. I had it on my main IP (as a vhost) and it was working fine. But then earlier today I recieved new IP's so I updated the IP in the tera-byte DNS server and my own servers admin control panel.

So basicly I just changed the IP of the actual site and as I said before itīs working when I put in the IP.

Just set up a reverse record, this is how to set up name servers on a raq :
Lets say that you want to set up ns1.domain.com with IP1 and ns2.domain.com with IP2
setting up ns1.domain.com :
create an A and a PTR record for ns1.domain.com with IP1
create an A and a PTR record for ns2.domain.com with IP2

Create a virtual site ns1.domain.com with IP1
Create a virtual site ns2.domain.com with IP2

Go to your domain registrar and registar ns1.domain.com as name server with IP1
and registar ns2.domain.com also as a name server with IP2,

Wait a day or so for everything to be changed (check whois) and then it should all work !

I didn't see the date but it doesn't matter, he's not the only one who reads it and it might help someone else,
