View Full Version : Searching For A Host

I operate a web site with 10GB traffic and 2 million hits per month. These numbers increase by about 20% each month. The message board on my site is CGI intesive and requires fast processing of scripts. My site has is not pornographic, but it does have a few adult links and pictures.

I currently have my site split over 3 hosts. My message board is on Virtualscape because of their fast servers. They charge $20/month for 5GB traffic. It is $15 per each additional GB, so I can't afford to put my whole site on Virtualscape.

I keep the non-adult parts on West Host. They seem like a decent company with unlimited bandwidth and low $9/month rates. I can't keep all of the non-message board on West Host since they don't allow adult links or pictures.

I keep the adult things on Netherweb. I am quite disappointed with them because of their downtime and extremely slow servers. They have excellent prices, but it just isn't worth it. The only reason I stick with them is beacuse I have 4 months left of a 1 year contract.

I'd like to make things simpler and switch all but the message board to a new host. Does anyone know of a good host that costs under $25 month, allows at least 10GB bandwidth, and allows adult material. So far the closest I have found is *****. They have unlimited bandwidth and a low cost, but I am concerned about reports of poor customer service.

They're a newer host on the board here so I don't really have a recommendation but they do offer adult hosting and seem quite reasonably priced. I think you might like to check them out and see what you think...

Urgenthost.com was the same as nomonthlyfees.com which did a disappearing act...so I dont think i would trust urgenthost

Repeat after me, "unlimited bandwidth is a lie, it does not exist", "unlimited bandwidth is a lie, it does not exist", and continue until you get it. ;)

Also, ***** has one of the worst reputations in the industry. Just look them up on this forum for details.

You might want to do some research. Your lack of familiarity with certain things can cost your dearly.

First, I didn't know of a connection, but second, nomonthly seems to still be around so what do you mean?

I realize that the bandwidth has restrictions, but I meant that it is more than I need. For example the fine print at ***** says.

*****'s customers are privileged to be offered unlimited traffic for their web sites. The intention of ***** is to provide a large space to serve web documents, not an off site storage area for electronic files. All (90%) of your web pages (html) must be 'linked' with files (.GIF, .JPEG, etc.) stored on *****'s server. Web sites that are found to contain either/or no html documents, a large number of unlinked files are subject to warning, suspension or cancellation at the discretion of ***** management. Any customer who violates *****'s Policies in abusing either space/site transfer will be notified and given 2 days to remedy the problem. If the problem is not resolved within the allotted period, the client will be billed for the overages.

To maintain the integrity of our service the following limitations apply:

Sites with banners, graphics or cgi scripts running from their domain used on other domains. Sites with picture galleries (This is any site where 50% of the files transferred is graphics) Sites offering download files or archives. (This is any site where 50% or more of there monthly traffic is from file downloads). Sites using more than 30% of system resources for longer than 60 seconds. Sites running multimedia files (QuickTime, Real Audio, Real Video, MP3).

For those that do not qualify for the unlimited service, traffic will go unmonitored until you reach 20 GB per month. Thereafter, normal data transfer cost of $20.00/1GB/month will be billed to your account. If you want to pre-pay for bandwidth overages, you will be billed $10.00/1GB/month. You will receive a notice on Tuesday morning detailing your bandwidth usage. You will have 7 days to visit http://www.overages.*****.com to pay for your overages. If you do not pay for your overages your site will be disabled within 7 days of your first notice.

20 GB seems close enough to unlimited for my needs. I have read the harsh comments about ***** on this message board and others, especially in regards to their customer service. I keep getting pulled back to the host when it gets rated near the top at various review sites. I suppose that ***** pays off a lot of those sites with commissions, so some sites inflate its ranking.

I have also spent a lot of time resarching possible hosts. It seems there is always a problem. The sites that offer inexpensive bandwidth, usually have slow servers and/or poor customer service. The sites that have the best combination of prices and quality usually don't permit adult sites. I realize that ***** has a lot of problems, but I have not found many sites that give what ***** does (20 GB traffic +adult) for $18/month.

I remember about 1-4 months ago, i went to nomonthlyfees.com and they allowed the domain to lapse, so a customer of nomonthly registered the domain and used it as a "central forums" and just from reading all the content of current customers, Nomonthlyfees seemed out of business. One of the owners of No monthly was an active poster until all his customers starting bombarding him with questions about refunds.

All he could say was something to the extent that No monthly was dissolved and if you wanted a refund "request a chargeback from your credit card company"

It looks like they got their domain back when i checked last night...

How urgent host plays in is i remember that guys exact words "We now operate urgenthost.com"

If you do some digging, i bet u can find connections between either company
