Greetings!
I'm new here, so please pardon me if I'm asking something too obvious. But here goes...
For sites you have hosted, do you use your Internet Provider's SMTP server, or do you use the server from the host?
Is it typical for a host to provide a high quality SMTP server?
Any info (or direction to pertinent info) would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

I think it's best to use your ISP's SMTP server. It's probably going to be fastest, and anything else will require some sort of authentication, or "POP before SMTP". There's nothing wrong with using your ISP's server unless you're having issues with it being too slow or misconfigured.

When I've tried sending e-mail through my ISP's SMTP server it sometimes takes an hour or two before it arrives at the destination (a big mail queue at the ISP?). So for that reason I use my hosting provider's SMTP, which is always reliable.

In my opinion a good host always provides and POP/SMTP server for your use. QMail, my favorite, does a great job, and has a patch out to make it Auth. only transfers so you dont have any worries about your SMTP server being used for relays. As for win32 options... Exchange Server is probl. your best bet, though my experience with it is more then limited.

Bobby,
Who is your host? I've been using ValueWeb, and their SMTP is horrible...

I use my own computer for an SMTP server. I find it much faster and more reliable than my ISP's.
