I have just registered a domain name with VERIO.com and I have just purchased some web space with a hosting company called CEDANT.com. I need to know if these companies are well known and respected or have I just made a big mistake.
Also, I now have to wait about 3-6 days for the transfer of my domain name from VERIO to CEDANT before my domain name works. Is this what usually happens ? Should I have registered a domain with the same company I have chosen as a host or doesn't it really matter ?(besides the transfer waiting period of course).
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME-----ANSWERS-----SUGGESTIONS.

Gopher, I have never heard of cedant, but their site mentions a 30 day money back guarantee. Just make sure you make up your mind before the end of the 30 days. As far as their pricing is concerned, it's a bit too high. If you shopped around you could have saved about 50% or more. But their price maybe worth it.
I believe their pricing is indeed worth it, as many regulars on usenet://alt.www.webmaster use Cedant and are very happy with their service. I believe some on SitePoint's forums also use Cedant and are reasonably happy.

I hear Cedant is pretty good in terms of support. You didn't make a mistake..so don't worry :)
I've seen a fair number of decent reviews of Cendant around the forums, with a few not-so-happy comments. You probably you have an 85% chance of it turning out well :)
Once you update your DNS information, it takes some time for the information to propagate through the Net. This is the same no matter where you have your site. It can be as fast as 24 hours or as slow as even 2 weeks, as it depends on other machines on the net updating their records. [I hope this was what you were asking... or have I misunderstood the question?]
I was pretty lucky, I have had a very good experience with my hosts so far (below10host) and my domain name took less than 2 days to show up most places :) [Minor plug for Below10Host here : when I first started I was bugging them even at 3 or 4 am in the morning and I still got replies from them within 2 hours. I was quite impressed :)]
Oh yah. Also minor plug for my domain registration people. I use 000domains and their web control panel is wonderful, their prices are nice and low ($13.95), and their support answered my emails really quickly when I was panicking one day (within hours).
PS. No, I'm not getting any $$ for plugging them, they don't even know who I am :)

Thanks for the reply ryu. I am new to the internet so excuse my ignorance in asking this question (to anyone who is reading).
I have registered my domain with verio and I have bought some hosting at cedant. I have a IP address that goes to my web site but I don't know how to transfer my domain. So now when I type in my domain it goes to a "website under construction" page at verio and I need it to go to my web site at cedant.
I am confused !!!
Is there an automatic transfer system, I think I already asked for a transfer but now I just don't know.
Hi Gopher :)
I'm new to this too, so let's see if I can make some sense out of what I've learned in the past few months.
The domain name you register needs to be linked to the IP address of your website. In order to do this, certain files need to be updated at both Verio and Cedant. I'll try to describe it step by step and hopefully that will be clearer.
When you first register your domain name with Verio, it comes with default nameservers (in your case it was Verio's nameservers). Nameservers are basically machines that keep a record of what domain name gets matched to what IP address. Machines on the web will look up the records in Verio's nameservers and go to the page that Verio's files specify - ie. your UnderConstruction page.
When you sign up with Cedant, they should give you the names or IP addresses of their nameservers. If they didn't give you this information, you will have to ask them for it. (my host sent this info to me right away in my welcome email)
You then go back to Verio and tell Verio to change the nameservers on file for your domain name to those of Cedant. If Verio is like 000domains and has a web control panel, you can login to your control panel at Verio yourself and make the change yourself at the appropriate places.
For example :
Original Verio nameservers were "ns1.verio.com" and "ns2.verio.com". [i'm just making this up, you can check your records for what the actual names are]
Cedant's nameservers are "ns1.cedant.com" and "ns2.cedant.com".
You go into your web control panel at Verio and change "ns1.verio.com" to "ns1.cedant.com", ditto change "ns2.verio.com" to "ns2.cedant.com". That's it... after that you just sit back and wait for the change to be picked up by the rest of the Net, which depends on how often other people set their computers to check the databases and update their own records :)
Once the rest of the Net has updated their records, everyone will start seeing your new home at Cedant. Some people may see the new place in a day, others may see it in 2 weeks.
Hope this helped and didn't get you even more confuddled :) If I missed out on anything or got anything wrong, someone please correct me!
ryu, who obviously has no life :)
