Hi all,

The server in which my sites are hosted on recently encountered an outage due to a motherboard failure. So far, it has been close to 4 days of downtime.

At this point, the company got a motherboard replacement, but are having some problems configuring the JVM.

Up till this point, I was quite happy with the developments and the resolution steps taken.

However, the administrator informed me that mysql database data is all LOST and they are having trouble retriving my application data from backups. Until now, I do not know the extend of my data loss.

My question is, is it reasonable of me to expect the hosting provider to at least perform weekly backups?

I am really at a loss. The hosting company that I am currently with is excellent so far. The response time to queries is quick, prompt and accurate, the services offered are sufficient to my needs. But this thing had to happen. I am not unhappy about the motherboard failurem, as I understand these things do happen. But I am deeply saddened by the fact that my data is all lost.

Regards,
Pak Tjun

It seems strange that a montherboard failure would affect your data storage

I would question them about the actual failure as that would indicate a hard drive failure as well

*Note this is purely based on the info you just mentioned

If you care about your data, you will do your own backups.

I agree. Even if your host has the best backup in the world a personal backup should be kept just in case because you just never know.

yep, trust nobody with your data, especiallly not a host....

as the guys above said, you gotta backup yourself....

but in response to your question: No I dont think it is unreasonable to expect weekly backups....

Yep...I guess that you are indeed correct. It is the first time happening to me...guess that once bitten twice shy...I shall be more prudent from now on wth data backups...<knocking my head on the wall>

During my term at a hosting company they once lost my mysql data because the hd died, and the tape backup was corrupted, so daily backups dont mean that much. More important is how many tapes they keep in rotation. ( 7 tapes would mean they can get yesterdays backup or 5 days befores backup. )
