View Full Version : It's almost impossible
Deadhead 03-21-2002, 05:29 PM for hosts that can't offer dedicated servers for $99 a month to even get their name out there when people get 7 or 8 friends together to keep their threads at the top.
Every day, the same 4 or 5 threads get bumped and everyone else falls away.
Isn't there some kind of line being crossed here?
Choppy 03-21-2002, 05:42 PM Deadhead this is so true!
I think the most i have seen one of my adverts stay close to the top was when people were actually generally interested but many of these other ads get bumped more and more and more!
What can you do!
kind regards
Deadhead 03-21-2002, 05:45 PM And there isn't much the mods can do, these guys have their friends pretending to be interested customers.
Akash 03-21-2002, 05:52 PM I agree, my threads usually move off the first fold within a day...
There should be a rule for the special offers forum where you can only reply with a question about the service, not a bunch of "wow your offer looks tgtb"
Deadhead 03-21-2002, 05:54 PM Or conduct business via email.
Post offer and close the thread...take up questions with customers through email.

That would work too....but then we have to have the same rule for the requests section....I hate those "PM Sent msgs"
They should make it strict, like a 1 week ban! Mayby then us "smaller guys" can make a living....
cabalstudios 03-21-2002, 06:02 PM ehm...
sorry to interfere in your aqusitions and discussions but there is a section on this board dedicated to such a thread

Deadhead 03-21-2002, 06:08 PM Suddenly he cares about WHT having a proper way to be run.
Suddenly sanctimonious.
cabalstudios 03-21-2002, 06:16 PM WHT will never run the way you want it too, there are too many things to take into consideration.
As, it happens to be everyone on this board cares how WHT is run, if we didnt we'd never advertise our business here.
You've got alot to say for a Newbie who's just signed up?

thesmallguyshost 03-21-2002, 07:33 PM <decided this didn't belong in the ads forum>
EzCool 03-21-2002, 07:47 PM It's a consumer driven market, if you can't capture attention saying 'no fair' will not help you in the long run.
Pentameter 03-21-2002, 07:51 PM It's hard to capture attention when people offering "unlimited space and bandwidth for free" are bumped to the top along with the other one's being referred to.
And I'm not so sure that calling out people for unfair tactics is "crying".
richy 03-21-2002, 09:04 PM gotta agree, these threads need a time to live before being booted to another forum. theres certainly been a common theme recently of a few threads being at the top all the time. and before you flame me, i dont advertise on here, so i dont have any issues apart from the fact as a third party i can see it happening. its sooooooooo obvious. some of it is innocent posts, some of it certainly isnt. after say a week the threads should be bumped to another forum or something.
maybe the newbie is a regular posting afraid , with justification, to reveal who they are , due to the nature of the posting.
Chicken 03-22-2002, 03:35 AM The only solution to the problem would be to turn off replies in the offers forums. We've done this before in the requests forums, some people liked it, some hated it.
The advantage of it is that posts are in order and stay in order by date. The bad thing is that this is a discussion forum and this sort of kills that whole aspect of things.
The same argument could be made in *any* forum on the board. Hot topics are kept and not-so-hot topics drop quickly, sometimes before getting enough exposure.
There isn't a solution that works perfectly and that everyone would agree on 100%.
Deadhead 03-22-2002, 12:03 PM Perhaps just having people respect the rules.
Having friends come in and talk about everything under the sun in an ad thread kills everything else.
Martie 03-22-2002, 07:55 PM Its clearly not discussion going on in those forums, but rather
a MAD DASH to grab clients.
**spoils** the intended purpose.
oooo well.
I agree that this is a very bad way to abuse WHT, but also realize that it is crap to not be able to respond to offers.

Remember that - and I thought it was much better :)
Personaly I don't post any offers, as all to often it tends to become a 'free for all' slag the host session.
Stupid questions, idiotic posts - all from people who 'should' know better- sad :(
Martie 03-23-2002, 03:02 PM So right! Ive been a member since 2000.
I thought those forums were a nice idea WHEN they started.
Unfortunately, abuse set in and it continues, just gets worse.
I RARELY post an offer, and I dont respond to many requests either.
There are tons of good hosts that do not participate on ANY level here, and believe me Ive seen tons that "used to be" members here that are now gone, as many have said:
"Its a joke"
Chicken 03-24-2002, 03:33 PM Well, you have to realize that one, we can turn off replies, if need be. Two, that from April 2000 to January 1st 2001 (9 months) we had almost as many members register as we get now in one month. Quite a different dynamic.
If we could keep everyone who has ever joined, then that would be amazing, but it isn't likely that's going to happen. Besides, all the good ones stayed, heh ;)
Of course I'm kidding... but it would really be impossible to make everyone happy all the time. We do our best, everyone needs to help out.
Personally, I think replies should be turned off in the ad forums. Partly because we get such a high percentage of reports from these forums (the 'pain in the donkey' factor), and partly because I feel that ads should just be posted and that's it. Any questions can be handled via Email/PM and we can modify the original post if something needs to be added.
This is just my feeling of it, not what is necessarily going to happen (relax!)...

Agreed, the same for me. At WHT there are tons of resellers offering an account for next to nothing, even provider offering ded. server for $99. I don't want to compete with them.

So, generally asked, why do you participate in any forum?
There are many reasons, to help others, to give something back to a community which helped yourself, to share thoughts, to hear about new trends, to learn from others who know more, for meeting other people,....

Well, is there any other forum that you frequent now instead of WHT?

Wait, are you implying that there is someone who knows more than me :D?
byron29 04-02-2002, 03:24 PM I think turning replies off in the ad forum would be much nicer overall.

If you know of it happening and can prove it; I'm sure a mod would handle if you told them.
Or; are you just jealous?
I don't advertise in there, so it don't matter much to me what goes on. Although I am a stickler for rules.
Eladesor 04-02-2002, 03:54 PM Trouble with the 'Job Offers and Requests' thread is that the sticky by our good ole turkey legs only covers the orginal poster (my understanding) and not subsequent posts.
Choosing to report the a poster to a mod returns "This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts." - and that doesn't cover it either!
My real problem (from my thread in 'Job Offers and Requests' ) is now that the sites received such publicity - who do I pay the commision to? :D
