1> If I assigned an IP to a regular account can I also use that IP for name servers?

2> If a reseller cancels an account and they used IP for their name server can I use those IPs for new name servers.

Thank you for your time.

1 - Yes

2 - Yes, you would simply have to remove their DNS zone file w/ their nameserver info. Your system would then not recognize that IP to that nameserver any more.

I remember reading in these very forums that nameservers [or hosts] no longer need unique IP [ I dont know for sure and I have never needed multiple nameservers and would like to be corrected if I am worng]

If that were true you can put all your resellers' nameservers on 2 IP's and let your DNS server listen to those IP's.

Actually, all the servers work with is the IP's - the nameservers merely drive them to your box thru DNS resolution;

so logically it wouldn't matter if

www.site1.com -> ns1.reseller1.com -> 1.2.3.4 and www.someothersite.com->ns1.reseller2.com->1.2.3.4

bring diff domains thru diff nameservers to your box. But I guess it's a question of the registry database's policy.

Would like some validation of this from some DNS master! :)

Yes, you can use the IP, but he must delete the nameserver at the domain registrar too or where he created the nameserver.

Well if this thread is right then you dont need to delete the nameserver for reusing the IP, and you can use the same IP for 2 diff nameservers...

You're welcome Jedito! :)

I have learnt more Unix on WHT than on any manual or book! and it is so frightfully habit-forming
