View Full Version : Pet peeves
bitserve 03-21-2002, 06:31 AM Okay, I haven't posted a pet peeve in awhile, but I have a bunch of them saved up.
1. I hate it when people refer to me as bitserve, bitserver, or bitserver systems. My name is mark, and the business name and my username is bitserve, not bitserver.
2. I hate it when I answer the phone, "bitServe, Mark speaking" and they say "Hi. Is this bitServe?" I want to say "No, absolutely not, I just answer the phone like that."
3. I hate it when people can't read:
"Hi. Is this Bitserver Systems?"
"Hi. Is this bitSurf?"
"Hi. Is this bitServers?"
"Hi. Is this bitServes?"
4. I hate it when people (jason) steal all of my pens, and my post'it notes. Because sometimes I actually go to write something down, and I can't.
Walking to a computer in the other room, I mumble to myself "207.142.1.5, 207.142.1.5, 107.142.1.5, 107.151.1.5, damn!"
5. I hate that fax machines are still stuck at 14.4K baud!
That's it for now.
SimonMc 03-21-2002, 09:44 AM Nice post bitService....I read it from start to finish!
akashik 03-21-2002, 09:45 AM Woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning huh? :D
Losing pens is one I can understand though... I've almost given up on the written word and instead cram txt files fill of useless information

Just leave empty pens on your desk, and make sure you write on all the pages of your post-it notes. That should confuse him. Take it easy Mark.

:D
Not really related to web hosting - but I hate people who come to a complete stop before turning in their cars!!! Break during the damn turn, don't stop!
Frosty 03-21-2002, 02:12 PM No, much worse: I hate people who drive (slow) 20 MPH everywhere they drive especially when they do it in the FAST lane.
Put the pedal to the metal jacka**!
Speeding tickets suck too. I don`t like cops either.

I keep Staples in business, I'm sure - the amount of pens I buy from there to keep my stock up
A pet peeve of mine is all the fraudlent advertising of unlimited transfer / diskspace or whatever.
And a smaller one is when people incorrectly use the term NOC instead of datacenter.

Matt
Escusemoi but what is the difference?
is datacenter for hosting/storage online only while noc is for all kind of network operations (internet access... etc)?

NOC= Network Operations Center. This is where monitoring and sometimes provisioning of service is done. It has nothing to do with the...
Data Center. The data center is where servers, routers, switches, etc are housed.

Greg, I'm the same way. Mostly because I can never find a pen, I'll open a notepad. And to remember it, I just leave the text files all over my desktop.
However, the problem comes when you need to bring it with you. So you have an IP address that you need to enter into a computer in the other room. You can't find anything to write on or with. So you say, no sweat, it's just one IP address, I can remember that. But by time you get to the other machine, you can't remember even one digit correctly. My short term memory is quite lousy, but I can tell you what my phone number was when I was 7 years old, and pi to the billionth.
Anyway, I agree with the driving. There are so many driving pet peeves that I have, but I've learned to relax more about those.
About the terminology pet peeves. I have lots of those, too. Especially everyone using the term subdomains incorrectly.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Keep 'em coming! You need to vent those pet peeves to get over them! IMHO, anyway.
Tetraboy 03-22-2002, 01:57 AM Expect to be called by your username.. I call everyone by the user name. Because if I tried to call everyone there real name like Matt then I would never remember because I have over 400 on my contact lists and thers tons of matts so thats why I use username easier to remember.

I hate people who come to a complete stop before turning in their cars!!!Hey, they have to stop. Before they can turn in their cars, they have to take their seat belts off or they get all tangled up.
redjackryan 03-22-2002, 10:20 AM My personal pet peeve are nimrods who can't or won't read. Case in point, today i'm driving into work heading for my parking garage. Theres a huge neon sign out in front that says
LOT IS FULL
LEASE CUSTOMERS ONLY
invariably there will be some nimrod in either a Cadilac, Bmw, or Lexus... pulled up to the ticket thing trying to get a ticket out.. I suppose they think that just because they drive an overpriced car that a parking space will magically appear for them.. Not being a morning person myself (but being in possession of a lease card) I often vent with righteous fury upon these brain dead individuals.
Now assuming that I manage to park without daily drama, I still have to get out. The garage only accepts payments inside the main building.. you can't pay as you exit.. There are 7 FRIGGING ENOURMOUS SIGNS all the way from the entrance door back to the cashiers...up the parking ramps, and on the front of the building.. Signs that clearly state.. you must pay INSIDE before going to your car.
Every single day I get stuck behind some idiot who hasn't paid and is now bottlenecking the entire lot up because they thought the sign 'didn't apply to me'
After 12 hours or so of dealing with stupid user tricks at work, i have little patience for the afternoon nimrods either..
Rewdog 03-22-2002, 12:55 PM I hate it whenever I am refered to as Red Dog.
For the last time I am not beer.
allan 03-22-2002, 01:19 PM welcome back from spring break, red bull :D.
My pet peeve today is people who cannot use the words advice and advise properly. If you are asking an opinion on something, you are seeking advice. If you are looking for a consultation, you are asking someone to advise you.
What I don't understand is how Chicken is able to parse through so many posts without his teacher brain exploding :D.
My current pet peeve are morons who save their password on a public computer. I hate checking my mail at school and having random person IM me on MSN or YIM or even AIM. There are signs all over the school library that says "No chat, no games". Haven't these people ever heard of AIM Express? The other week I logged into Yahoo! Mail and wound up in someone's account because they downloaded YIM.
I also despise people who talk like that SNL character sketch of the guy who has that speech impediment. They can't talk in a soft voice on their cell phone. I don't care if you're quitting the community college and getting kicked out of your apartment by your parents and moving to Baltimore with some guy you've known since, like kindergarten. I don't care that you think you can get into UMBC just because you got a 1400 on your SATs. And a public bathroom is a public bathroom, not a public forum for you and your cell phone!
Proper Inet 03-22-2002, 08:59 PM I can't stand people who type in chat shorthand:
how r u ?
Please. If you are going to be communicating with me, at least type with full words.
phpjames 03-22-2002, 09:08 PM I really hate it when people eat bananas and make that damn chewing noise or slurping of soup. I know its kosher to do that in Japan but have some freaking manners! Grrrrrr
Tetraboy 03-22-2002, 09:09 PM U nt hp wd da net spk? Wht wrng wit u?

The only reason people lose so many pens is that they have so many of them that they do not cherish the value of the ink medium.
I've had, and used on a daily basis, the same pen since 1977. It is the only pen I have. If I lose it, I cannot write, Therefore I do not lose it. :D
The palest ink lasts longer than the longest memory.

I know, huh. How much time are you really saving? Those people also tend to use multiple exclamation or question marks, thus defeating the purpose of saving space. They also tend to let go of the shift key too early: "how r u???????///"

There's also there, thier, and they're... your and you're... to and too... its and it's: All of these are real problems on this board.
Very few people do this, but some people use are instead of our. That really drives insane!
It's to the point where I'm surprised if I see a page of text without a spelling or homonym error.
IceBlaZe 03-23-2002, 06:08 AM Wakakakaka sikakak shakalak mikakak gaka naka!
allan 03-23-2002, 10:40 AM An additional pet peeve I have, and forgive me if I am being U.S. centric about this, is that the $ goes in front of the amount not after...so it is $10, not 10$.
I hate people who replace letters with the letter Z.
resellerz
gamerz
ugh ...
