View Full Version : looking to switch to new host

Okay, so I'm another Jumpline customer who needs to jump off this sinking ship. Like everyone else, my experience is they were great 2 years ago, but have steadily gotten worse, culminating in the recent "upgrade"... and now do not respond to support requests at all.

So I've been lurking here for a week trying to educate myself & figure out what I want/need

I've got most of the basics down (like don't fall for "unlimited", don't go with *****, check with BBB, etc.) and I've posted my "wish" list in the request forum here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41026

In the event that the host that's right for me doesn't happen to read that post, I was wondering if any customers of hosts (since I'm guessing mostly host providers read that forum) can recommend a good host that meets most of my requests. I didn't want to repost the whole request here, so I just put the link.

So far I've been seriously considering:

realprohost.com
wyenet.com
ciwebhosting.com (if anybody can definitively tell me they ARE or AREN'T related to ***** that would be great, so far I can't tell, but they do have that "too good to be true" ring to them)
diatone.net
hostrocket.com
tera-byte.com
hostinggroup.com
aletia
ventures online
www-hosting.com
webintellects.com

but they all have mixed reviews and/or look good in one area but lacking in another... not all pass the too good to be true or BBB test yet, but I'm trying to be open minded to some of the suggestions I've read so far.

Thanx in advance for any help/advice/recommendations anybody can offer. Anybody that can point me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Have you considered Site5.com to be in your list?

Not on your list, but have you considered either Hosting Matters (http://www.hostmatters.com) or Site5 (http://www.site5.com)?

I to am a victim of the most recent Jumpline fiasco. So after 3 years decided this was the final straw, and so began my search for a new host. I searched here - there and everywhere. There's certainly a lot of conflicting stories that can lead to confusion. But after sorting and filtering it all out, and because I have several sites, I went with:

1) Site5.com (http://site5.com)

2) Venturesonline.com (http://venturesonline.com)

I've only been with them about a week, but so far both have been real good with support etc.

They both offer good host packages on a monthly basis with no setup fees.

Both have pretty good reputations here and are certainly worth a look.

Good Luck
John B.

I haven't looked at site5 seriously because they don't offer domain name registering... I suppose I can go use my own registrar, but I'm not happy with NetSol & I don't know who to trust when it comes to all the new registrars popping up. I figure it's safer to go with a host that can also do the registration (well, really I'm just transfering the registration, I have the domains I want now, but I may want to add some in the future) - I know most of them aren't doing the registration themselves they are using a registrar & outsourcing to them... but my thinking is that I want my host & registar to have a relationship already, so if they're already partnered up to provide registration to host customers they will work smoothly together... if these are all bad assumptions, please let me know, and if you can suggest a good registrar as well ;) well that would just be great

Hosting Matters just doesn't provide quite enough space at the price I'm looking at. And I couldn't get any info on them at bbb.org, so I'm more weary. I had seen their site before, but haven't considered it as a serious option yet.

Thanx for all the replies!

I have an account with UKName.net hosting, and I must admit they are not too shabby. Definately worth a visit, so far the support, the service, and the speeds have been top notch. I am moving my other site over to them just b/c of the great experience I have gotten already. My icq number is 54769136 if you have a couple more questions, or just shoot the breeze. :)

Hi
just thought i'd recommend a company thats given me more than just hosting. Fantastic support, and a great feeling knowing your in safe hands :)

I started a hosting account with ukname.net about 14 months ago. Since then, i've had only a few problems, all fixed within 30-60 minutes incredibly!

Email me - ginga@farmwars.com if you need any help :)

There are quite a few registrars you can trust, such as dotster, directnic, opensrs (tucows) and many more.. try a search on these forums. Most are also better and cheaper than NetSol (they suck).

Personally I'd rather have control over the domains myself, so I'm sure I can leave a host whenever I want to. A lot of registrars have easy control panels to move your domain from one host to another as well (in contrast with NetSol, where domains are extremely hard to manage).

If you still really want the host to register a domain for you, I guess you could ask a host and I doubt they will refuse to do so :)

Absolutely!

If you end up switching hosts - which seems to happen more often than you'd like - it's nice to be able to set up the new account, switch the nameservers at the registrar and then tell the old host goodbye. You don't want to lose control of your domain name.

Stargate and GoDaddy are very cheap for .com/.net - seem to have a reasonable reputation - 000domains.com (OpenSRS reseller) only a little bit more seem to have a good reputation.

If I was buying more hosting at the moment at the $10-$15/mo. level my short list would be:

venturesonline
hostmatters
site5
liquidweb

Get into e-mail dialogue with your short list, negotiate a bit and see which feels right.

As far as registrars go, I'd rather pound nails into my forehead than deal with Netsol ever again. They're horrid.

I have nothing but the best to say regarding register.com . No problems ever, and they have an interface that allows you to change anything relating to your domain in real time. I'll never use anyone else again.

I'm personally using hostrocket, it's fast, but a little expensive compared to some others, but like any other host they have problems, you can go to their forums @ http://forums.hostrocket.com to take a look.

Site5 is not bad also, nice features for a reasonable price, it's frequently recommended on this board.

Maybe you can also take a look at
www.zeonhost.com
www.alwayswebhosting.com
www.httpme.com

These are some hosts I'll personally consider using.

Most of all you have to know each host no matter how good is it will have their own problems, so there is nothing like a perfect host.

good luck =)

Ohh i forgot to mention www.stargateinc.com if you need to register domains, it'll be better to take control of your own domains, they charge 8 usd if you register more than 2 domains and have it's own control panel to manage all of them.

No, they are not related to *****, to the best of my knowledge.

Weird. Informational paperwork was sent to the local BBB as part of the business setup long ago, but we never followed on that up to make sure it was entered. Thanks for the heads up on that.

thanks for all the replies, I will look into some more of the hosts suggested, and serisouly consider moving registering my domains with a separate domain registrar... one question on that, I wasn't talking about actually having the host be the owner of the domain, I still want to be the owner, but just have a host that can do the registration... I think (hope) that's how one of my domains is set up at Jumpline (if I'm wrong about that then I really should transfer it before I switch... what are the laws about that topic? I PAID for the registration, they just set it up, but anti-corp.net DOES list them as the contact in a whois, they said that was to keep us more anonymous, does that mean they really own the domain? are they legally obligated to let me transfer the registration since I paid for it?? please don't tell me I have one more thing to be pissed off at Jumpline for!)

thanx again

thanx again Use something like www.betterwhois.com to make sure you are the administrator of the domain - if you are you can make the nameservers change or even transfer to another registrar.

Keep your domain registration separate from your hosting arrangements. Register the domain first then sign up for hosting.

yeah, after reading everybody's suggestions I realize that really is the best way to go, and after looking at some of the registrars suggested I feel more comfortable doing that (thanx for those suggestions!)

I already logged into the domain manager at Jumpline & made myself the administrative contact, so I'm sure I can transfer the registration anywhere I want first before I switch hosts

that way I can sign up with my new host, get everything set up there, then do the namserver change & domain transfer while both accounts are running, so there is little if no downtime during the switch over. I realize this will cost me some as I pay for two hosts...

thanx again

If you need more control over your server, might check out cagedtornado.com. They offer virtual servers which is a small step behind dedicated servers. Support is fast and friendly. I'm very happy with my recent switch to them.
