View Full Version : CD Burner Problem...

I just installed a Yamaha 16x10x40 E-IDE CD Burner to replace my old CD-ROM. I followed the instructions, turned on my computer, everything seems to be working. When I put in a CD to install the Adaptec Software, the CD-RW drives makes a really loud noise. It works; the auto-run screen comes up to allow me to install the softweare, but the drive makes this horrendous noise.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? I don't believe that is normal is it? I tried the Yamaha Service website but it is down right now.

Thanks for any help

-Steve

Have you tried inserting a regular CD-rom just to see if it reads? If it reads, then you know it's nothing physical with the burner itself. If not, it probably is.

Now I'm only asking this next question because I saw someone actually do this once...you didn't put it in vertically did you? If you did, that will throw the optic eye out of alignment. The optic eye is the part that reads the CD. And if it's out of whack, it can make noise sometimes. (When I managed a car audio/home stereo store a few years ago, we had one unit in particular where the optic eye was so far misaligned it would whine like a tea kettle. When we tested the unit in the shop, the boss came running because he thought someone had put on a pot of coffee. :)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think it's something physical and you should test things on that end.

No I didn't put it in vertically :)

Well, I tried an audio/video cd and it just made a "spinning noise" which was not extremely loud. Then I put in the Adaptec Software CD and it made the really loud noise. Kind of like a saw cutting logs. I tried Diablo 2 as well and it gave me a similar sound....

Sounds like you've got yourself a defect there, friend.

I think it's jealous of your sound card :D

Not totally so Lawrence. What it's doing is creating an extended dance mix version of whatever noises the sound card makes so that HumanClay can become a DJ and make lots of money! (It's actually a Yamaha DJ CD player, not a CD burner. :))

I went and exchanged it for another one and it works fine and dandy :D The second one made a somewhat similar noise as the first one when I put in the game Diablo2, but it was much quiter than the first. And the other CDs I tried only made the normal "spinning noise"

So I guess the other one was just defective or something. Man, that sound it made... you could hear it in another room in my house it was so loud.

I dont know but this is worth a shot, the ribbon cable i think it is called, maybe touching a certain like part of the CDRW and makes it vibrate, see cuz i had this SI swimsuit CD i couldnt put in without it making a big sound letting everyong in the world know, so i would check out if anything was touching, before taking it back

heh heh... if I had tha tCD, I'd be making calendars too. Damn things would be all over the place. I have frog calendars. Really neat frogs. Multi-colored frogs, horned frogs, blue frogs.

Note: Don't lick the blue frogs!!! They're poisonous!
