Hi all

I have a winme box running apache, mysql, php, perl etc:

I have my site within a nanosecond of being up and ready for the world, but........

I have just installed win 2000 on anoter box and now I can see how much better the security is, I don't know a thing about win 2000 but I learn sort of fast.......

Should I set back my site a couple of months by changing over to win 2000 and at least after that time I will have a better chance at having a secure server

or

should I just keep learning on my winME box and have a site that is up and running?

any help with this pickle will be greatly appreciated

thanks

It shouldnt take you a couple of months to switch. 2000 is just better overall and is worth the switch.

Thanks, I like your optimism, I think I will switch , but I dont know all the pro's and cons and it scares me, I will have to redo all of the php scripts, or get new ones for win 2000, but like you say it'll be worth it

Should I keep using apache or use the iis that comes with win2000?

Thanks again

I would _strongly_ recommend going with Apache. Though for the short-term, you'll get up and running quicker with IIS (if you're dead set on Win-based hosting).

/me steps off his FreeBSD podium. :D

As for redoing the PHP scripts -- I don't see why this would need to happen. We've developed plenty of PHP scripts for clients on our RH Linux/FreeBSD boxes and seamlessly moved them to their Win2K boxes.

Maybe you were talking about having to re-install PHP by moving to Win2k, which is definitely true.

I've done a lot of hosting work in both Win2K + Linux/FreeBSD. If you have any questions as you get ready to launch your site, feel free to PM me. :) And good luck!
