Hey all,

In need of a bit of guidance (a lot actually but this will cover me for a few days ;) )

Would someone share with me what (free) SSH Client I should use to log into my host's server? I will need one that is dummy proof for sure. One that has a good FAQ / How-to section would be most helpful, too.

Any advice or cursing's would be appreciated, :)

Thanks much,

snoooky~

I use putty. Very simple and nice.

You mean you're not going to write your own SSH client from scratch?

Kids these days... ;)

cperciva....:stickout (hehe)

If I had the skill of writing that sort of stuff, I'd of done so by now. (sighs) BTW, I appreciate the compliment of sorts, by referring to me as a kid... MADE MY DAY!

I second the vote on Putty. Good free SSH. Can't quite figure out how to upload/download files with it yet.

I also like PenguiNet by www.siliconcircus.com . Not free but low-cost and very easy to use.

Best "free SSH client" I ever used was my last download of the RedHat Linux ISO's. :)

Assuming that you're using Windows, I would recommend PuTTY if you only need SSH for a single site once in a while. If shell access is going to be a regular thing for you, I would recommend paying the cash for SecureCRT.

Agreed, SecureCRT is a great program, worth the $99.

On a related note, does anyone have a good recommendation for a web-based shell (ala CPanel)? I'd like to offer this type of solution to our customers.

I use Putty on a daily basis, and use it to access about a dozen sites. Never had a problem with it, highly recommended.

SSH Secure Shell
http://www.ssh.com/

"The Windows version of SSH Secure Shell for Workstations is available free-of-charge for non-commercial use. Non-commercial use includes hobby/recreational use, university use, and use by charity organizations and public libraries. Site licenses for the Windows version are available for universities."

Commerical Purchase is $99. Well worth the cash.

I've set quite a few people up using PuTTY -- I haven't heard any complaints.

I use secureCRT too. It is great.

I was using comman line ssh and it was a nightmare.

SecureCRT is very good. It supports both telnet and ssh. It even is able to transfer function keys, control keys and show graphical characters.

I frequently use mc (midnight commander) and secure crt has been the only client on windows which works with it very well.

I've been using Putty for the last few months on about a dozen sites. Have been running multiple sessions etc., and have had no problems. Why would I want to pay $99 for another piece of software??? What are the advantages??

Warm fuzzy feeling?

You are correct. For what most people need in an SSH client, PuTTY is the right tool.

Plus, the advantage of using the same free SSH program you'd refer to your clients is knowing it inside and out when they run into trouble. :D
