View Full Version : hypermart Problem
Nic[H]olas 12-24-2000, 01:48 PM I used hypermart a while ago, and there was an option to have the banner placed on your page, or as a pop-up window.
This optiosn seems to have vanished.
is there anyway i can insert some code to make my banner be on my page and not in a seperate window?
Eg.
<!--#include "bannercode" -->
Thanks,
Nick
Spider John 12-24-2000, 01:53 PM There are many free web hosts that aren't even ad-banner supported at all. Why host someone else's banner and have them make the money off of your hard work? (I believe http://www.icestorm.com doesn't require banners, for example.)
Another alternative would be to host your site with a company like http://www.terrashare.com . Terrashare.com apparently splits the revenues with the web developers. (I don't know what the details are however.)
I think there's also a web site Chicken refers to the odd time that outlines all the free web hosts out there and allows you to compare them, but I can't remember the URL offhand.
-Edward- 12-24-2000, 02:40 PM Think hypermart are getting rid of self placing as its easy to cheat. and its http://www.freewebspace.net but he knows about that site already.
Nic[H]olas 12-24-2000, 02:46 PM ok i understand that, but is there anyway i can "cheat" the pop-up windows?
Stop them or something? My pages are .shtml if thta helps?
-Edward- 12-24-2000, 02:48 PM Nick - Nope it wouldnt be wise to cheat them anyways. If you want adds off your page id pay and go with a good host.
Nic[H]olas 12-24-2000, 02:51 PM here's the deal:
The site must be hosted with ppl who allow .zip and .exe files
The servers must have php or SSI
it must be a sub domain
-Edward- 12-24-2000, 02:54 PM Free or paid?.
Nic[H]olas 12-24-2000, 02:55 PM free (hides under his desk)

Ummm maybe because they're giving you space on servers they pay for and have to keep up? I know it's great to get free stuff, but how long will a free host last w/o advertisements on pages? Anyway, have you tried contacting hypermart about it? It may take awhile for a response being around the holidays now, but sending an e-mail can't hurt.
-Edward- 12-24-2000, 03:01 PM Don't f2s allow zip files?. and exe? .....
F2s.com also have php and a weird ssi.
and a short subdomain (=.

I have used f2s on other sites.
They now don't allow .zip and .exe they run a script on cron to delete them :(
I'm stuck!

Are you sure about this??? Here is from their TOS:
2.1 HyperMart is capable of allowing you to use 20MB of free Web space thanks to the sponsorship of our advertisers. Each page that you create is required to carry our advertising HTML, which will load in an advertising banner. These banners will always be limited to one standard-size (468x60) sponsorship banner. The banner advertisements must be located "above the fold" on all HyperMart-hosted pages. "Above the fold" is the uppermost viewable area within a browser window consisting of 608x320 pixels, which is approximately the size of a single screen that is visible to browsers without the need for scrolling.
Brian Farkas 12-25-2000, 01:37 AM Hi, I was on Hypermart a LONG time ago (e.g. the month it was started), and if I remember correctly you can place the following code on your page to have the banner placed ON YOUR PAGE- remember it has to be "above the fold", though:
<!--#echo banner="" -->
I hope this helps!

Not being a host, I am merely speculating, but I would guess by selling "targeted emails" to web-development-related products/services would be one way. You fill out the form, you put in an email address, the host forwards it to a software company/CGI script producer/etc.
Another way that I've seen is the "shareware" hosting concept, where a host offers you a certain level of service for free, then additional services (more webspace, bandwidth, domain hosting, etc.) become an issue. Mind you, this isn't a very common example, but yes, it does exist.
JustinK 12-25-2000, 07:52 PM True I guess. I've never seen a host that's lasted and done something like that w/o advertising on the persons page though.
kunal 12-26-2000, 02:31 AM Its IT Revolution guys. Its not Internet Technology, its Information Technology. The guy who has the information, has all the cards in his hand. How you uses them is a different thing. He could easily sell the information he has collected, to any advertising firm. There are a lot more ways to make money to.

.shtml pages aren't needed on Hypermart from what I remember, and could probably cause some errors.
<!--#echo banner=""-->
is what you need to put on your pages.
