View Full Version : Datahosts.net & DNS difficulties

I signed up for service with Datahosts.net about three weeks to a month ago. I already had a domain name - www.kittykats.org (http://www.kittykats.org) - but weeks passed without my site ever working.

There were certain times when I alone could view it, but no one on any other machine could... Datahosts' tech support claim they can see it, and they have stated that they don't trust my complaint. For the past week, even I haven't been able to view it. When I could see it, it seemed to be up at one moment and down at another, completely independent of my doings - I didn't touch it.

I tried working with them for over a week, but I only ever got one-sentence replies that offered me nothing in the way of help. I sincerely don't believe they understand what they're doing, and I'm hoping that someone might be able to point out the difficulty.

A friend of mine in tech support summed what he believed to be the problem as:

While pings, and traceroutes go to the IP address 64.186.75.222 (which I believe to be the correct IP from everything that you have told me) If I open a browser window and attempt to open the site in there, it is directed to IP 66.45.70.215

That IP is shown as being in the range:-
**************************************************************
Inflow (NETBLK-NFLO-AR-2) NFLO-AR-2 66.45.0.0 - 66.45.127.255
Apogee Telecom Inc. (NETBLK-INFLOW-7170-3993) INFLOW-7170-3993
66.45.64.0 - 66.45.71.255

****************************************************

I've put the majority of our correspondance online:

Their original solution - ineffective (http://www.davident.com/Images/Elspeth/data1.htm)

My response and more "advice" (http://www.davident.com/Images/Elspeth/data2.htm)

A friend of mine contacts them with lots of information (http://www.davident.com/Images/Elspeth/data3.htm)

My frustration is addressed (http://www.davident.com/Images/Elspeth/data4.htm)

My friend identifies the problem (http://www.davident.com/Images/Elspeth/data5.htm)

Apparently my friends and I are stupid (http://www.davident.com/Images/Elspeth/data6.htm)

The last email basically implies that they don't believe my claim that the site doesn't work. No matter what proof I bring to them, they never give any heed to what I say.

I have never been so poorly treated by any company, and I have run out of patience with them. Even if they can't correct the problem themselves, I feel as though they should at least be able to direct me about what to do - instead of claiming that I'm lying.

I recently contacted Network Solutions, from whom I purchased the domain, in hopes that they might be able to help me. I haven't received any response yet.

I have a feeling I would be satisfied with their service if I could actually use any of it. I can upload, but nobody (aside from the tech support people) can see the actual site.

I have no idea what to do. If the company won't give any credit to what I say (basically telling me, "We'll take your money, but your problems are your own business."), how is anything supposed to change?

Help in any form would at this point be so very much appreciated.

You have www.kittykats.org registered as a nameserver with an IP address of 66.45.70.215. You probably ought to delete that and see what happens.

see http://www.nsiregistry.com/cgi-bin/whois?whois_nic=www.kittykats.org&type=nameserver

Your host (or a redirect in .htaccess) is redirecting requests for kittykats.org to www.kittykats.org, which resolves to the wrong address in the root nameservers. Your host can't see it because they didn't look past their own nameservrs, which have the correct info.

::edited to add explanation. Myfirst response was kind of terse. :) ::

How does one delete www.kittykats.org from being a nameserver completely? And can I do this myself, or would my host have to do it?

You should go to your registrar, which in this case is network solutions to add/modify/delete nameservers based on a domain. At Network Solutions go to "manage account" I believe. You should be able to do this yourself.

Hi elijah,

I'm one of your complimentary (free) user, so far all so good, support has been friendly (hey its free, what more can I ask for).

In fact I had no problems (basically all I need is webspace only) for the past months (more than 5) but suddenly my domain sganime.com went down

I'd sent my trouble post in the Datahosts forums but no reply so I later sent a support email to you. Although its not 48 hours yet but I'm eager to know what happened.

I'm not sure is datahosts the problem or my registrar, which is namesdirect. Anyway I can't login to their dns management area...

Please email me back thanks! Its been 1 day down already.
