View Full Version : Dilemma: what OS/Language to use?

I am looking for a new host for a bunch of websites I'll be creating. And I seem to be stuck over what language to use

I want to have a host with majordomo, which I can only find on *nix hosts. The websites will be data-driven, so I'll be doing quite a bit of programming. I have many years programming experience, with as main languages BASIC, Pascal, Visual Basic and ASP/JavaScript. I never got on with C, C++ or Perl

So a host with *nix, Majordomo and Chili!Soft ASP seemed like a good idea. However, some of the messages on this forum suggest that Chili!Soft ASP isn't the best thing to use (something about it emulating an old version of JScript or ASP)

Any comments about Chili!Soft ASP and/or suggestions for other programming languages

Also, I would need to be able to test the pages locally, under W2000.

One other option might be to have access to both *nix and W2000, so Majordomo can run on *nix and the ASP/JavaScript pages can run on W2000

Final option would be if anyone can suggest a W2000 hosting package which includes some serious discussion list software (not impressed with imailsrv, included with my package on HostRoute)

Any suggestions?

CoachCoen,

I have not done anything with mailing/discussion lists, but read through this document from the Merak mail package and see if it would provide you the functionality you are looking for.

http://icewarp.com/Knowledgebase/Merak_Mail_Server/Accounts/Mailing_Lists.asp

They seem to recommend it for discussion lists, but I am not sure if it is any better then Imail.

Good Luck,

I know that RackMy.com is a solid Window host, but I don't know if they carry the mailing-list app. I would recommend you to contact Mike with RackMy. Reading from his posts, he's seems to be a very knowledgable guy and might be able to help you out. :)

From the various reports of Chili!ASP I've read, it also seems to take a substantial amount of system resources up. I would personally recommend jumping on to a W2K server and use native ASP where available.... And if you can afford it, *nix would be good too, though don't dismiss some of the decent ASP mailing lists out there.
