View Full Version : Cobalt RaQ OS on a white box?
Asher S 03-19-2002, 02:04 PM Hi all,
I was just wondering... do you guys think that if you restored the cobalt raq 4 os image on a 'normal white box' ... it would work?
I mean seriously has anyone tried this? It would be kinda cool to have that good ol' cobalt raq interface on a plain ol' white box...
your thoughts? :)
Regards,
Asher.
cbtrussell 03-19-2002, 03:17 PM Sorry, but for all practical purposes it can't be done.

yes after some thought i realized that myself (because of the hardware differences). but i'd still say that its not *entirely* impossible. i mean you could hack around a bit and make your own custom build out of the raq os and copy it over to a red hat machine. still this is just a thought a really! :)

Ummm.. I dont think its at all possible unless you somehow "hack" the motherboard or whatever components on the motherboard the software work with.. This has all ready been discussed many times, Do a search to find out more.. But I know I wanted to do the same thing at home on an old pentium PC just to mess around with and I found it was not compatible. Somehow the colbalt linux os intigrates with the system board.. Good luck..
Patrick-EV1 03-19-2002, 04:23 PM Oh it's possible.. :)
mpjetta 03-20-2002, 04:44 PM What a tease. ;)
jambler 03-20-2002, 05:00 PM To be honest I'm not sure why, if you have the skill to do so, you wouldn't already be using something far better, FreeBSD or Immunix etc. And, to my knowledge the Cobalt OS is more or less a rip from RH. Also when you think about it, its not impossible to do so, because if it was Raq wouldnt have been able to do it.

I think Sun is highly capable of designing there software/hardware to work hand in hand.. The only reason I did not think it was possible is because I have read it on the Cobalt forums and somewhere here on WHT.. If Patrick says it can be done im pretty sure he's not fibbing ;)
Asher S 03-21-2002, 02:11 AM Well anyways its an interesting thought that raq inferface is pretty neat :)
e5p1der 03-21-2002, 09:19 PM Interesting, I've thought about doing this myself b/c I've seen RAQ clones on ebay. Just haven't had the time to mess w/ all this. But I really do think it can be done, however, the question to me is, Is it worth the hassle??? It might be...
Fiber 03-21-2002, 09:24 PM The time spent tweaking everything out to get it to work on a white-box, I'd rather spend tweaking a chosen operating system of choice and chances are it'd be a bit better (but that's just my opinion).
Neo3Net 03-21-2002, 11:02 PM What would be the advantage of having raqs on white boxes?
I mean if it was just the Control Panel I am sure someone can make a control panel that is Cobalts for RedHat or something.
Why bother?
Asher S 03-22-2002, 12:34 AM The RaQ interface is really neat i'd pay good money to have that on my white boxes ;)
Even a clone-type interface if you know what i mean.

thesmallguyshost 03-22-2002, 01:36 AM Ummm.... also illegal maybe? :)

To my knowledge Colbalt is developed from the Red Hat source tree.

That is correct it is a 'version' of redhat.
Neo3Net 03-22-2002, 10:46 AM Why would it be "illegal" To make an interface for whit boxes just like Raqs?
All you need to do is change the colors and you got it. (hehehe)

It would be illegal to load the Raq OS onto another machine. Cobalt has busted a LOT of people that were using Raq3's with Raq4 OS as hosting servers.

Not entirely accurate. The reason folks got busted is because they were advertising the servers as RaQ4's. I've frequently mentioned on this board that a RaQ must ALWAYS be referred to by its original hardware configuration, no matter which OS is on it.
Cobalt has been tolerant of ISP's restoring RaQ3's with the RaQ4 OS as long as they're still sold/leased as RaQ3's.
Why would they do that?
When you purchase the RaQ hardware/software combo, you commit to the license Cobalt grants you to use that combination. It's their proprietary package, and they only license the software to be used on their hardware.

Asher S 03-22-2002, 12:27 PM Oh i thought people were getting busted simply because of installing 4 on a 3 which doesnt make sense yes but the part of advertising a 3 as a 4 deserves punishment ;)
