Whats the best approach launch new services when they are in conflict with existing services.

For example One comapany has a domain(lets say abcHosting.com) running for last 10 years and is getting good amount of hits/visitors and the sales with it. Now after 10 years they want to launch new service under same roof.

so whats the best approch. Should they just add one more page in abchosting.com
or launch a new site (lets say abcdesigns.com)

If the domain is there - do both. We are actually in the process of this as well. Domain names are cheap enough now that there is usually no reason.

Have a page under abchosting.com that gives a little information about it & then click over to abcdesigns.com for more detailed information

We purposely chose to just get a domain with our company name in it so we could throw everything under the same roof to help with SEO :)

Use sub-domains instead... designs.abchosting.com, seo.abchosting.com, whatnot.abchosting.com

You still lose SEO optimization with subdomains though... www.abc.com/services/website_design/ www.abc.com/services/hosting/ www.abc.com/products/widgets/2.0/

just a thought :)

I would worry about SEO if I was in the first pages. Is that the case? Do you get sales from clients that search certain keywords in google, yahoo... If it's just a case of losing some places from 1250 to 1450, well...

I didn't understand if the new service was really conflicting or not. Some hosting companies also offer webdesign. And those 2 services aren't conflicting. But they could be. If you offer por example budget hosting, and you decide to offer expensive webdesign, it wouldn't be a good idea to offer these 2 services under the same brand. The end customer is not the same and the site's design would have to reflect that. Not only the site's design, but also the language and the type of information displayed.

If you're going to be one of the best webdesign houses, you can't sell hosting and webdesign on the same site. You can have a link from one site to the other. But you'll need 1 site for each service, to cause the right impact. I would choose a clean design for web hosting. Professional, but clean. But i would go for a sofisticated design for a webdesign company or service.

If the webdesign is just an extra to increase sales and you're going to target your hosting customers, then it can fit without any problem in the company's hosting site.

Just a few ideas... Be happy!

It depends upon whether the new service is complementary or competitive to the current offering.

There is a lot of leverage in promoting one brand that has multiple services, but if you are trying to offer very different services which have different target clients, that using a separate domain/brand name will avoid confusion.

Multiple domains, by themselves, do not help SEO.  Google is very good at spotting "circles of webs" that only link to each other.  Simple example - if your new domain does not have any incoming links from other places, then it will not help your SEO.

in order to appropriately answer this question a thorough analysis of the company, the services offered, target markets, reputation, etc needs to be conducted. Anything prior to this is pure speculation and il-informed. I would honestly recommend getting some professional marketing advice, conducting a little marketing research on your business, then making a well-informed decision on how to go about this.

My experiences have shown that separate brands work better - no matter what product or service you're offering.

After successful continuous service of say 10 years in the business I think usually one has gained the customer faith and the reliability at this level, now I think that the business has attained its maturity level and it is the time to redefine your need by sort of metamorphosis . You can also adopt the new marketing techniques with further up gradation process by way of generic benchmarking and other method to enhance it further growth. If you are going to launch a new site by giving extension to yours existing ones with same segment I think that you have to work hard to establish it from the initial level to recognize its brand name etc.

Ultimately when the customers come to know that the new site is the division of particular company, their expectation level increase or they may confuse and start comparison with your established site and the conflict may start.

However if it is a diversification completely in different segment then I think that there is no chance of conflict.
