I have been trying to find a name and so far I have been unable to find one. I was wondering how important is the domain name? Can any one help me out with a name. I am going nuts.

The current trend seems to be to have host in the domain name, but certainly not in all cases. There are many examples of successful hosts who do not have follow that trend on these forums.

Personally, I believe it's a good thing to have host in the domain name, as it reflects your primary business - but that's just me.

Are you after a shorter name than what you currently have?

There are many examples of successful hosts who do not have follow that trend on these forums.

A good example would be XO Communications at www.xo.com ;)

It's hard to find a good company name with "host" included. I gave many attempts but most of my ideas of a company name seems to be taken. D'oh.

Hey, when you see the word "serv", what comes to mind? Simply "service"?

In certain countries, it means to 'tell someone off'.

I don't recognize 'serv' with service.

I dont think that unless you have a type in name like hosting.com then it really matters. How did the people find you anyway? They will need to be looking for hosting to get to your site.
What is the need to have host in the name if people are not going to find you anyway. If our company was called jameshost.com then there is just as much chance as someone typing in anything else.
You need a catchy name that is easy to remember.

I don't think it matters what your url is, most people find you by clicking on banners, text links and through search engines, not by typing the url :)

And I didn't even know that there was such thing as deleteddomains, it can be very useful, thanks!

There ya go... a name that cries out "webhosting!" :)

The best names for any business are those that are brandable. Having "host" in your name is less important than having a name that people will remember, and will differentiate from your competition. You're better off with a unique name domain; you can add "hosting" to it whenever you actually use it, or to your company name, if you prefer -- but there are many more good domain names available without the four letters "host" than with.

I just searched for "host" and excluded "ghost" (you'll get alot of ghostly domains if you don't).

I guess I'm in the wrong business then, if all the domains are taken :).

Anyway, as these names (and the fact that thewitt can still afford to eat) show, there are plenty of domain names available and thousands expiring every day. If you want a name with "host" in it you can find one. But I don't think that having those four letters necessarily makes a good name -- there are so many hosts with similar names, you have to choose carefully.

Looking at those names, I think "ewebhostingcompany.com" is a good example of a bad name. And "hostforporfit?" There are some times when registering misspellings might be useful, but that's not one of them.

I think, like JayC said, it is more important to have a name that people will remember. Anyone ever hear of verio? :D

Customers always say they remember our name because its a bit strange.

A few people said they thought it was a online domination site at first :)

Oh well its working for us.. Simple is best, impressions are remembered.

Kind regards

Do it like carmakers and Intel. Pick a latin word with many prefixes. Hack the prefix off. Register the root. Get 3-6 domains for the price of one while seeming smart.

Here's one that's already gone but you get the idea...

code.com
re.code.com
en.code.com

Mix and match roots and prefixes till you get something you like ala Pentium, Integra, etc.

Or do it William Burroughs style. Cut a bunch of words up, spread em on the floor and let your subconscious do the work.

The only thing that I think matters in a Domain Name is that it is simple and at the same time it stands out. If you have a name that is very long or has tons of numbers in it people won't easily remember it. The easier you .com is to remember the better. Also if it is attractive that is another good quality. It could also be something different. I found ipowerweb.com something that stuck in my head because it was unusual.
