My name is Jackie and I'm new to this forum. Everyone seems very helpful and eager to chime in on any given topic which is exactly what I've been looking for!

I've been trying to figure out what company to go with as a reseller. I'm currently with Cedant, I signed up with them as a reseller after using them to host a few simple sites and getting customer service I was quite happy with for the most part, and no down time so far. But I'm looking at the plans that they allow you to resell and something seems a little crazy. Maybe it's me, I'm new to this, but I'm getting the feeling that the accounts you're allowed to resell equals paying a lot for very little space. So I'm looking for info to compare to and there are so many companies I'm overwhelmed.

Anyway I've been following the threads regarding McHost. One one forum in here everyone was singing the praises of McHost and on others the entire thread pretty much discussed horrible customer service. I was about to consider joining Mchost after reading the praises but decided to go back and read more reviews & experiences and wow how things change.

The thing is, the threads that describe unfortunate experiences of unsatisfied customers start with complaints from 2001. People defending McHost say that the problems will all be corrected within days, since they are hiring more people/fixing servers etc. But as I look through the posts they continue right up into February of 2002 and apparently the problems still exist.

One thing I like about Cedant, which makes me want to stick with them as a reseller *IF* it turns out they are cost-effective, is that no matter what issue I have with them, no matter how trivial a question, I get an email back within an hour. Always. And they ask questions and wait for replies from me and reply quickly again and again if need be. I'm a complete novice at hosting, and for all I know the whole company could be run by a mouse on wheel with a rubber band but the two most important things to me at this point are there- my (simple) websites stay up and they are always responsive.

So I have no idea how Cedant is in the scheme of things but I feel confident in them because they tell me the truth. I know nothing about McHost or any other company and I'm not implying that McHost lies or Cedant uses mice and wheels but all I'm saying is that customer service is sooooooooo important no matter what's going on.

I'd love to hear back about what companies people really seem to like to use to resell hosting. I create sites for small businesses and organizations, I don't need anything crazy. ;)

 I just compared Splashhost's pricing with Cedant's reseller account pricing. What the hell am I missing. Maybe Cedant is a reseller already? Cedant allows you to sell an account with 10 mb for $5.95 a month while Splashhost's prices start at $5.80 for 100 mb? And more features? Am I missing something?

Your site is generating errors. I am getting the following error message:
Line: 6
Char: 1
Error: Syntax error
Code: 0
URL: http://www.desseldesign.com/index.html
I am using IE version 6.0.2600.000

Also, just my opinion, but the popups are annoying.
I got 4 different popups when I clicked on the links.
However I do like your design simplicity.

Oh yea, almost forgot. I like MCHost.

Okay, I do realize I'm the only one in here. But now I have a question to add to my own thread here. I was at Splashhost's site and read all their info. If I purchase a reseller account, do I basically just add new websites into my own reseller account space and they can have their own domain? I decide how much space to sell to each and what prices to charge? If this is the case how do other companies offering reseller accounts at such high prices stay in business?

I know I'm a pain in the ass. I do appreciate the help tho.

Jackie

Thanks for the warning.

 <----- just learning java, only supposed to be one popup with the info changing in the window. The error message is probably something in my java too no doubt.

*sigh* rats

Take a look at VenturesOnline (http://www.venturesonline.com/). They have a good reseller package, and a very good support team. Search for them here at WHT.

Stay away from Readyhosting. They offer a great price and a great package, so it seems. Lots of down time, and poor support.

Hello jdessel, and welcome to the forum.

Basically, there are two popular types of reseller programs---three if you count affiliate-type programs, although they are not as popular now.

1) Buy (lease) accounts from a hosting company, at a much reduced price, as you need them. Then resell them for whatever price you want. The main selling point here is the ability to buy as you need, without taking a big plunge. The start-up costs are low. Each domain has its own control panel, with the reseller being able to add these accounts easily.

2) Buy (lease) accounts having a large amount of disk space and bandwidth. Then divide up the space and bandwidth into packages of your choosing. The main selling point here is that it is more economical in the long run. The start-up costs are usually higher, but you get to divide the resources up as you see fit. Each domain should have its own control panel, with the reseller being able to add these accounts easily.

Which type you choose is totally up to you. There are pros and cons to both.

Good luck to you.

I would say the things at mchost will get better. They are over the honeymoon phase when they had few clients and delivered super fast support. They're now at the "too many clients and not enough support" because everyone raved about them during the Honeymoon stage.

Marc says they have new staff coming on. IMO, they just need to clone 5 Davins and all will be sweet!! :D

So in summing up - they are a good choice but don't expect super fast support for at least 30 - 60 days from now. [18th March 2002]

Things do change. What changed the most is the fact that if something goes wrong with 10 customers you'll only have 1 or 2 unsatisfied customers. If something goes wrong and you have 1000 customers, you have a more unsatisfied customers. Once your company grows and you have more clients, you will notice this effect as well. Yes, as mentioned in other threads, there have been some server issues which were not our fault and can happen to any company. Is it our fault if the network receives a DOS attack? No. Any network can get hit anytime. Is it our fault that customers don't check the resolved tickets? No. Is it our fault that customers don't use the proper way of contacting our customer support, which is through the helpdesk? No. If things were really as bad as they seem in the past few threads, you would not see 4 or 5 unsatisfied customers, but 1000's.

If you look around WHT, there are similar threads right now about Hostrocket, Aletia and Tera-Byte. They're all good companies. But if they are good companies, why do they have more complaints than Steve's Family Hosting? Simply because they have more clients ...but they are still good companies.

You cannot say Compaq is a bad company because it takes them a week to deliver the same computer that your local computer dealer could build for you in 1 day. You cannot recommend a company and then get angry at them if they become popular. Give them a chance to improve whatever there is to be improved and you'll be happy. :)

Thanks for the reply Kiwi, I understand everything you've said about McHost and I hope I didn't come across as bashing McHost.

Thanks!

I might worth trying instead of big companies.
