View Full Version : Another Try at Colo Price Question

Since the last thread turned into a battle between two members I am starting a thread to try and get some opinions on a local colo facility.

They are using all tier 1 providers (sprint, AT & T, UUnet, etc) and they have the following pricing program:

Metered $1 per Kbps per month measured using the 95th percentile.

OR

Per Meg > 3.1 Mbps $581

1.54 Mbps $895
768 Kbps $795
384 Kbps $595
256 Kbps $495

So is this comparable to other colos? The price per rack foot is $200 per month which includes 1 amp of ac or you can pay a little extra and get 8 amps of inverted power.

Any thoughts?

I'll try posting this response here instead :D

Those prices are a little high as others have mentioned..

A couple of large colo's here in Denver (with multiple providers- no cogent though..) offer:
1.54Mbps - $650/mo
and it goes down from there..
I've seen footprint prices range from $50/mo to $200/mo for 1 to 4U of rack space.. A full cabinet w/power, etc.. will run you about $600/mo here..

If you need less than that, many also offered to work with me on what I need and how much the $$ is.. (I think this is cause there are MANY datacenters here in Denver that are nearly empty after recent economic stuff.. they are pretty much beggin for customers). I also think the price would be different depending on the location of the datacenter..

How will this be measured? on 95th? If so, then I think it's still expensive. If it's by average, then I think it's not bad at all. But then again, price does not say anything ... If you can get good quality network, good uptime, good support, then even paying $800/mbps will at the end pay for itself, I believe.

The price you quoted does sounds like NAC's pricing. If it is so, then from my experience, NAC is pretty good ... quite high uptime (I would think close to >99.8%).

These prices are actually from a local company that provides dsl and dial up as well as hosting.

The prices are based on the 95th percentile.

Also, are most colos requiring you to supply your own router and firewall? Most of the one's we've investigated have not but this company does. Might be something to think about.

I believe this company would have excellent uptime. I have been to the facility and it is state of the art. All 100% fiber optic connections, multiple OC 12 boxes waiting to be installed along side half a dozen others. Very nice operation, nice people too. I just don't want to be paying more for the same service somewhere else.

They should be able to supply you one (or two prefferably for redundancy) Ethernet cables which you just plug into port 23 and 24 of your switch. :)

They are going to provide us with direct ethernet connections. One or many depending on our needs and growth.
