ok, im a newbie here

question: wats with cobalt raqs? wat makes it unique from the other servers? why do people like using them? i've tried their control panel and it looks crappy (jaggared edges). and there priced almost the same as with the other servers on the market.

They're cheap and extremely easy to run.

if your just doing basic to midrange hosting, their the the best thing since sliced bread...I have 12 Raq's in my datacenter. I use the Raq4's for my low end hosting packages, I use 1ghz RaqXTR's for the larger sites needing large MySQL databases etc...

Their not the fastest thing money can buy but they are easy to setup/work with and I haven't had any major problems with them.

while many find raq's to be very usefull i would not use a raq on anything expect for plain text html. I do not feel they meet hosting standards for me.

Their CP is very easy to work with, the system administrator has some easy ways of applying patches and updates to the system from the CP GUI.

Other than that - well it is true the machines are pretty lame, but it does not mean you can't use it for for advanced ( PHP/MySQL ) hosting - you just can't have as many sites on them.

A Cobalt Raq is a low end server designed for newer people. The control panel is extemely easy to use and they run on a modified OS.

We even have a forum for Cobalt (moved :D). I suppose what makes them unique is that there aren't many (though RaQs aren't the only one) servers you can buy, shove in a rack, make a few settings on the outside of the box, and then email your customer and let them know that the server is up and they can access it immediately and start serving pages (a tad bit oversimplified, but it is close). It is a hardware/software combination that is easy to update (in theory sometimes), and fairly easy to maintain (some Red Hat Linux skill surely wouldn't hurt).

I am new to using the raq's but I have been in the field for over 25 years. I setup servers for a living and you can't beat them.

Other servers take much more time to setup and take care of.
Don't forget all the admin time required to patch the software to stay on top of the current problems. With any of the windows servers your admin time will be more than three times the amount of time. I today's market customers won't stand for the down time let alone the cost.

ya ok, so its good if ur gonna own/rent one raq. but wat if your deciding to pay to host your site on one? would be worth the money? its almost the same as the prices of the others (unix, windows)

I would say it's worth it. Think about what everyone has said about them. Easy to administer, great uptime, great reliabilty, cheap price. All these things combined mean that it's cheaper for you. The company spends less money on all the above listed so you can get a lower price. Doesn't sound to shabby to me. :)

ONe thing you have to realize is that...

1) Most clients don't really use control panels all that much, thus to be honest, they aren't as big of a factor as you'd think they are. Here, people might use cp's more, but I'm talking general population.

2) A PII233 with 64 MB of ram on a capped 128Kbps line can actually serve web sites pretty well (menaing a server full of sites). The RaQs aren't the most powerful servers (by any means) but they have enough power to get the job done for a good portion of the sites on the internet today. Put bigger sites on a bigger server.
