Hello-

How come most hosting places don't offer JSP? Is there some sort of drawback to it? Does it require a costly license? It just seems to me that like 75% of all the hosting websites I've seen don't list JSP as a supported feature.

Thanks.

JSP is resource-intensive and requires knowledge of Java and Servlet API, that's why most hosts don't offer it. Your host should have install a servlet container for you already, so you don't need a license.

I find that most hosts don't offer it because they don't have a tech that knows how to set it up for a shared hosting environment.

Or, for the same reason that they're using an outdated version of PHP and Apache. Once they get everything working, they don't invest any money in development to keep up to date.

Anyway, in my experience, JSP doesn't use up any more resources than any other CGI, unless you count technical support resources.

Sorry TheMatrix for jump in an off topic.

What jsp/servlet engine are you using?
I saw that every private instance use at least 80 MB of RAM.
BTW I'm using Tomcat 4.0.1 in some servers and 4.0.3 in anothers.

One thing that I have to agree with you, there are some host that don't even know how to tune apache, or upgrade PHP.
And I know it because I got email asking for help, althrough they bash my offers after I helped them.
