View Full Version : What are the rules for domain names?
Aaliyah 12-22-2000, 12:04 AM Okay. I registered popartist.org about a week or two ago and my dad recently talked to a friend of his and he said that .org domains are for non-profit organizations only and if I make any money on my site (I planned on using banners) it would be illegial. Can anyone tell me the rules for owning a .org domain? I've done a search on lycos but got nothing.
Thanks!
Chicken 12-22-2000, 12:11 AM Org was intended for organizations, but that has pretty much been thrown out the window. Fell free to make your millions with your .org
Sachin 12-22-2000, 12:11 AM Ya... .org domain name is for non profitable organisations only... i think you can find the specifications about this on domain name registration sites...
Good Luck
Sachin
Scott 12-22-2000, 02:46 AM The dot ORG tld's origin was for organizations.
The dot NET tld's origin was for networks.
The dot COM tld's origin was for commerce sites.
This idea went out the window ages ago, the only ones that are restricted are the .GOV & .EDU
Feel free to use your .ORG any way you want.

cbaker17 12-22-2000, 04:09 AM You cant get into trouble making money on .org domains, there is no law against it.
kunal 12-22-2000, 04:52 AM Yups.. Earning money of a .org or any other domain aint illegal as long as your income is legitamit.
There is no law against it.
Lawrence 12-22-2000, 06:35 AM The general idea is that .org is for non-profit organisations. However, there are no strict rules controlling their use, if there were, you'd probably have to apply for them (like .gov and .edu domains I believe).
If you want to use the domain, go for it.
astralexis 12-22-2000, 12:46 PM That's it. Read the terms that you accept when registering a domain. Are there any restrictions regarding the type of site you may host under a .org? NO!
The only risk is, that if a non profit organization should pretend rights on the domain (e.g. because the domain is the name of their organization), the argument that they are non-profit whereas you arent, might have some weight.

Aaliyah 12-22-2000, 09:02 PM Okay thanks. I didn't think there was a problem with me making money off my .org domain until my dad's friend said that.
I feel better now.

etLux 12-23-2000, 07:13 AM The .org domain is actually only used to make money by illicit sellers of human organs -- you know, kidneys, livers, etc.
I thought everyone knew this.
Chicken 12-23-2000, 08:24 AM Please don't give him any ideas! :)
etLux 12-23-2000, 08:27 AM I agree, Chicken. Instead, in the Spirit of the Season, each of us should now reach deep inside of ourselves, and give a body organ to a hungry neighbor or friend.
kunal 12-23-2000, 09:05 AM Hmm.. why organs when we can give chickens to them??
hubwest 12-27-2000, 03:09 AM I have a customer that is an Attorney using a .org domain extension.....there are NO problems, best of luck with your online business making money from you .org domain.
