There are a lot of different options depending on what you want to monitor, and a lot of tradeoff between "best" and "easiest". If you're not concerned about price, just go with a managed hosting provider. If you are a hosting provider looking into getting into managed servers or monitoring your own servers, find someone who is technically knowledgable...Your "easiest" criteria won't be as important then :) As far as recommending an actual tool, try Big Sister. http://bigsister.graeff.com/ ffeingol 03-15-2002, 09:30 PM You could check out: Big Brother (http://www.bb4.com/) Netsain (http://www.netsaint.org) Demarc (http://www.demarc.com/) It really depends on what you are looking for. Frank Also be sure to check out Mon. It's a lean clean monitoring machine: http://www.kernel.org/software/mon/ Neo3Net 03-16-2002, 06:39 PM The best out of all of those is Big Brother. Its very easy to use and is very flexible. (Big Sister is the free version of Big Brother) ho247 03-16-2002, 07:20 PM If you want to choose which servers to monitor and if you want to monitor as many servers as you want, I would use NetStatus Monitor (http://scripts.tlcwe.com/). I've only just started using it for my own servers and it's very good. It's simple to use, with a clean interface. If you're a webhost, you can even let put the display on your website so clients can see which of your servers are online and which are having problems (not too sure where the advantage is there), but if you code in something like a notification system, so you get notified if a server isn't working then this script will be the ultimate monitoring script I think. But doing monitoring from your own server would mean you'll have to have a server somewhere, where it is near 100% uptime, so it can monitor the other servers that you have. I all hope this helps you. Alan P.S. Forget to mention that it's easy to install too and uses PHP/MySQL. patmccroch 03-19-2002, 05:11 PM Is the link above correct for NetStatus Monitor? It takes me to tlcscripts.com for a product called kbase, a knowledge exchange app. -Jason DigitalXWeb 03-19-2002, 05:14 PM Check the bottom of the page under FREE SCRIPTS you will see a brief description and a link to download the script. jambler 03-19-2002, 06:08 PM tail -f /var/log/all.log *cough* p1net 03-19-2002, 07:26 PM I use demarc and so far I am very happy with it. It is based on snort so it does a lot more than monitor uptime. It watches network traffic and can tell you if your server is being attacked or if there is any suspicius activity!! :) I have to say that It was not the easiest thing to get it working but it was well worth it!! :D |
