View Full Version : Dial-up
kmurrey 03-15-2002, 04:10 PM I want to offer Dialup for my accounts so they have a local phone number to dial for the internet.
Who sells dialup accounts that you can resell for profit?

This has been asked a few times in the past; if you do a search for something like "dialup access" or "resell dialup" you'll find a few past threads on the topic that name some sources.
I'd just point out that you should be ready to handle a tech support load beyond that of hosting... everytime someone buys a new computer or just screws something up, remember that they've grown used to being able to call aol or msn on the phone 24 hours a day!
kmurrey 03-15-2002, 05:09 PM I use bobcares.com for all my tech support stuff... so that won't be a problem...
I was looking for anyone offering dial-up now.
Thanks.

avara 03-15-2002, 06:08 PM There are already too many ISP's on the market today, and most people are switching to broadband (like cable or DSL) at the moment. In other words, I do not believe it would be a good idea to start yet another dialup access provider.

Keep in mind that when people have problems related to their hosting account, they're still able to go online and send email asking for support. Dialup support has to be available by phone... because when people have problems they obviously can't get online to email you.
Not meaning to argue with your business plan, I'm just pointing out something you should consider.
AH-Tina 03-15-2002, 08:13 PM We offered national dialup plans back in 1999 or so...it just wasn't worth it. We also tried it again 6 months ago...and just recently stopped offering them altogether. Still isn't worth it.
There just isn't a big enough profit margin - and dialups are very hard to sell. Then, as was mentioned here, users need ALOT of support getting setup. Ever try to help a friend setup internet access over the phone? Remember how frustrating that was? It is FAR worse than hosting support.

Neo3Net 03-16-2002, 06:46 PM I don't really see a need in providing users with dialup accounts
If they didn't have one then they wouldn't be on the net (excluding public libraies and such).
But if you wanted to become your own ISP here is a solution http://www.g2kisp.com/
They have great software for you.
BUT I really don't advise you to do it. ISP support is very hard to do. BOBCARES doesn't offer ISP support. And the problems that people will have are "I can't install this program and can't get ONLINE" So bobcares won't work there.
Anyway, Good Luck on your descion.
miami_g 03-16-2002, 10:31 PM dialup is B.S. however is offering .com for $12/year bs?
its all nothing more than a hook to offer resellers.
caution of note, dialupusa has a minimum on their contracts, try to break it and you will be sorry
in the end its a waste of time for most
we will probably d/c isp when the contract ends
:D
kmurrey 03-16-2002, 11:26 PM Thanks for the feedback...
I appreciate it.

Neo3Net 03-17-2002, 03:58 PM Its all about the hook. I know www.PearlNetwork.com offers an anomyous 1800 Number for their resellers to offer their customers.
Tom Pyles 03-17-2002, 04:04 PM For what it's worth, we are a congigen reseller, and they offer the cognisurf dial-up for $12.45 a month. This has been a big seller for us. If you have any questions, just PM me

RandyJ 04-10-2002, 11:08 AM For what it's worth... I have been in the ISP business for a year and a half. We were profitable after 1 month. We've grown to a size very unforseen by our best estimates. While many local ISPs would love to have 1,000 customers... we are national and have many times that. We are ramping up offering DSL as well, because we do have customers that want it.
The tech support issue is handled by us this way... we have an online support pages that help them through some of the problems. In the event that someone is unable to resolve the problem through email, they can all our corporate number.
Quite frankly... with so many users, one person is generally able to handle all the tech support calls (that is one person at any time during the day). There are days we recieve no calls... actually that is true over half the days... while we do get emails regularly. I think it's important to offer software that is solid, that will do the configuration for them.
If you have any questions... I'll be happy to answer them.
DaHOST 04-10-2002, 01:01 PM RandyJ, You're software has to be real solid to have days without a call. IMHO Dialup is a lot more work than just webhosting ;)
RandyJ 04-10-2002, 01:25 PM You are probably right about that... Dialup is more work then Hosting... most of my hosting customers I never hear from... although I have nowhere near the # of hosting customers as I do dialup.
Thanks for keeping it in perspective.
FocusOn718 04-10-2002, 01:42 PM www.dialupusa.net is probably the best in my eyes - they offer great services... I have > 1,000 dialup users with them.. nice profit :)
miami_g 04-10-2002, 08:37 PM we got into the dialup about a year ago at diaupusa
we signed a two year contract
cant wait for it to end and get out
profit margin is too low for time it requires billing
for $2 profit i wont drink corona this week
ill take bud w/o the isp stuff
my recommendation dont waste your time
dos centavos
FocusOn718 04-10-2002, 09:03 PM I signed an amazing cntract and i pay $4.00 per dialup and sold for $16.95/mo - Had these customers for years - Dont offer it anymore - I dont even do anytthing - I just see money.
RandyJ 04-11-2002, 01:51 AM I don't know how you're doing things miami_g... or exactly what kind of contract you have with them, or customer levels you're at... but I've targeted other then big markets (more rural areas) that are not covered as well by local ISPs... and I've get customers left and right... in fact... our customer service department is the largest department we have, they just take care of new customers, billing and orders.
I would agree with you... if all we made was $2 per customer per month... I'd probably get out as well...
There are other companies that provide similar services as dialupusa for cheaper prices... and I'd be happy to talk with you further on it (just email me)
