View Full Version : Looking for some people to shared a dedicated server
rhenderson 05-04-2005, 03:58 PM If you host your website along with your clients and it goes down, people try to email but your mail is down as well. What can you do?
My solution is to set up my main site on a different server, the problem is I tired 2 different times with two different companies and it was a disaster, so here is my plan.
Set it up on a dedicated server....
My offer is to get some people to split the costs of the server with me. I am figuring on getting enough people to make this feasible but keeping the number low so the server reacts well. I only want people to host their main Web Hosting Business on this server and use whatever other server for their customers.
I am proposing a cost of around $36 a year ($3.00 a month payable a year at a time).
Disk Space and bandwidth specs would be (I am estimating I have not bought it yet)
500 Megs disk space
5000 Megs BW
DirectAdmin CP
Each Host has a Dedicated IP Addy
Most likely a 10 MBit connection
Your own nameservers
I will setup a private registration domain so it cannot be traced back.
If I can get 10 people to start with I will get it all setup. If your interested PM me or email me at halo@brightok.net to kick this off.
I will also take suggestions.
Thanks
Randy
FIAHOST 05-04-2005, 08:10 PM according to your calculations, this a $360 a year server. What kind of server you have for this price? A server you can trust?
5000Mb is nothing for a business website :-)

For just my hosting site it is more than I need. If you read the post I am not looking to move your whole business to this sever, just your main site, it is the whole ideal of the post.
If you re-read the post I said

10 People to START, I would pay for the rest, I figured no more than 20 Sites on the server i.e. around $720 per year.
Look this is not for everyone :-)
Regards.
Randy
FIAHOST 05-05-2005, 09:33 AM Thank you for your kind offer rhenderson
I don't think you are going to find the parterners you seek. The main business website is the more important for any business. As a host, we prefer to trust our own servers. I think all hosts think the same.

No I am not kidding.
I have tried 2 with ZERO success, (they couldn't install zend, they switch control panels, they got sold from one company to a next, for 2 weeks then resold to another company with 2 weeks of that, they had horrible uptime etc...Who needs the headaches that you cannot control) and I do not need a reseller account for one domain. But it is tough to get the private nameservers etc.. with a single account. Then most resellers do not private register their domain associated with thier host name so anyone can read the email headers, and do a whois to see whom the reseller is buying their service from. If you know of a reseller that is $3 a month that offers private name servers, anonymous host name, 500 MB diskspace, 5000MB bandwidth, and is reliable, can install the software a hosting company needs etc.. please post it
I am going to do it regardless of "who's in". I just wanted people to have the opportunity to have a very very affordable solution to a problem many resellers face. If you do not own the server and something goes down and your clients are down, you cannot answer their email and you are at the mercy of whomever you bought your reseller account from in regards to when the server comes back up.
Regards,
Randy

I may not find the people I seek, or I might. Like I said it is not for everyone. I agree about trusting your own server, it is the whole point of why I do not want to use a reseller account or another account somewhere else.
Not all hosts own their server, so not everyone has the opportunity to conrol what happens. We do agree, the main business of the website is very important. However I disagree it is more important than to customers sites or needs. We feel we have a obligation to the customer to offer support and the best uptime.
Cheers,
Randy
dollah 05-09-2005, 05:12 AM to manage 10 people to pay monthly 3 dollars, is quite challenging.

I guess you skipped over part of the thread so I will quote it for you.
